Newmont is the world's largest gold miner. It bought Goldcorp in 2019, combined its Nevada mines in a joint venture with competitor Barrick later that year, and also purchased competitor Newcrest in November 2023. Its portfolio includes 17 wholly or majority owned mines and interests in two joint ventures in the Americas, Africa, Australia and Papua New Guinea. The company is expected to produce roughly 6.9 million ounces of gold in 2024. However, after buying Newcrest, Newmont is likely to sell a number of its higher cost, smaller mines accounting for 20% of forecast sales in 2024. Newmont also produces material amounts of copper, silver, zinc, and lead as byproducts. It had about two decades of gold reserves along with significant byproduct reserves at end December 2023.

Reliance, Newmont Report Q1 Financial Results; BHP Proposes Acquisition Of Anglo American And More: Thursday's Top Mining Stories

Australian multinational miner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BHP">BHP Group</a>'s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) nearly $40 billion bid for rival Anglo American (OTC:&nbsp;NGLOY) may not be enough to acquire the company as other diversified miners will probably make rival bids amid the global scramble for copper assets.
After completing a $6.4 billion takeover of Australian copper producer&nbsp;OZ Minerals&nbsp;last year, BHP is doubling down on the red metal amid widespread expectations that demand will greatly increase in coming years as the global economy transitions from fossil fuels. 
Solar and wind farms and electric vehicles require more copper than traditional utilities and internal combustion engine automobiles.
"This is the latest move to consolidate in industrial metals driven by a scramble for copper and other metals central to the world&#8217;s clean energy movement,"&nbsp;Sean Casterline, founder of the investment consulting firm&nbsp;Delta Capital Management, told Benzinga.
BHP, already the world's biggest mining company, is currently the third-largest copper producer behind Chile's state-run&nbsp;Codelco&nbsp;and U.S.-based heavyweight&nbsp;Freeport-McMoRan Inc.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCX#NYSE">FCX</a>). A combination with Anglo American would push BHP to the pole position.&nbsp;&nbsp;
"In our view, the copper assets are the primary driver of a proposed transaction,"&nbsp;RBC Capital Markets analysts said.&nbsp;
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Rival Bids Seem Likely</h1>
BHP said it offered 25.08 pounds ($32.27) a share for London-based Anglo American, which said it is reviewing the proposal. The all-share deal values Anglo American at GBP 31.1 billion ($38.9 billion) and is contingent on the U.K. company spinning off its shareholdings in Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANGPY#OTC">ANGPY</a>) and Kumba Iron Ore Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KIROY#OTC">KIROY</a>), which are both listed in South Africa.
The proposal represents a nearly 14% premium for Anglo American's London-listed shares and a 31% premium without the platinum and iron ore units.
Analysts said that probably isn't enough.

Anglo American's shares have been so beaten down recently that its board and shareholders probably see BHP's bid as undervaluing the company, including copper assets in Chile and Peru, where BHP also has copper operations. Anglo American's shares have been suffering because of operational problems, a disappointing production outlook and a slump in diamond and platinum-group markets.
BHP's offer is "a timid and somewhat convoluted bid" that "won't be enough to draw either Anglo's board or its key shareholders," Liberum analyst Ben Davis said. After BHP's offer, he raised Anglo's price target to 27.50 pounds ($34.41), a near 25% bump from the stock&#8217;s closing price before the offer was officially made public.
Jefferies analysts went higher, saying a price of at least 28 pounds ($35.04) per share would be required for serious discussions between the companies, and a takeout price north of 30 pounds ($37.54) per share would be the outcome of a bidding war.
"If BHP does indeed continue to pursue this deal, we would be surprised if other bidders do not emerge," the company said. "Let the games begin."
The RBC Capital Markets analysts pegged diversified miner Glencore (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLNCY#OTC">GLNCY</a>) as one logical bidder because of the potential advantages in combining the companies' copper assets. The company also listed Vale (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VALE#NYSE">VALE</a>) as a possibility because of the attractiveness of combining iron ore assets in Brazil. 
Davis pointed to diversified multinational miner&nbsp;Rio Tinto&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>) as his top pick for an interloper, although he noted the company has a reputation for preferring to build mines rather than buy them.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Gold Miners Expand Copper Holdings</h1>
One reason why copper acquisitions are attractive is that building new copper mines from scratch is expensive and time-consuming.
That's especially true in the U.S., where getting a permit is difficult, or in other jurisdictions such as Panama, where a court ruling recently forced the closure of a huge copper mine after local protests, said&nbsp;Jason Crawshaw, portfolio manager at&nbsp;Polaris Capital, which invests in copper miners&nbsp;Lundin Mining Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUNMF#OTC">LUNMF</a>) and Antofagasta (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANFGF#OTC">ANFGF</a>).
"There is a scramble for assets," he told Benzinga. "Everybody is always looking to get more exposure to copper."
Even gold miners have been interested in bulking up on copper assets.&nbsp;
Last year, U.S.-based gold mining major&nbsp;Newmont Corp.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) bought Australian gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd. for nearly $17 billion, adding nearly 50 billion pounds of copper reserves and resources in one fell swoop.
Meanwhile, Canada-headquartered rival&nbsp;Barrick Gold Corp.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) is spending nearly $2 billion to expand a copper mine in Zambia, targeting expanded plant production in 2028.&nbsp;

Metallic Minerals Corp.&nbsp;(OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mmngf#OTC">MMNGF</a>) announces that all four holes drilled at its Newmont-backed La Plata project in Colorado intersected porphyry-style mineralization from the surface and over their entire lengths.
In releasing the final results from its 2023 drilling campaign at its La Plata copper-silver-gold-platinum group element (Cu-Ag-Au-PGE) project in southwestern Colorado, Metallic Minerals Corp. announced that all four holes intersected porphyry-style mineralization from the surface and over their entire lengths.
Three of four holes in the 4,530-meter program intercepted continuous porphyry style Cu-Ag-Au-PGE mineralization over 500 meters in width at 0.3% Cu, including significant intervals exceeding 0.5% to 0.7% Cu Eq (copper equivalent) with associated Ag, Au and PGEs. Drill hole LAP23-05 intersected 909 meters of continuous mineralization from surface, grading 0.26% Cu Eq over the entire hole length with a 550-meter-wide higher-grade zone.
The intensity of the mineralization in the drill holes varies based on the &quot;veining and concentration of associated sulfides that carry the copper, silver, gold, platinum, and palladium&quot; Metallic Minerals noted in a release.
&quot;Our emerging vision for the La Plata project is that we have the potential for a district-scale system with multiple porphyry centers in addition to the Allard resource area&quot; said President Scott Petsel. &quot;This is supported by the multi-kilometer scale metal-in-soil values that extend well beyond the area of drilling and correspond with strong alteration responses in our detailed district-scale airborne hyperspectral survey.&quot;
Newmont Corp. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nem#NYSE">NEM</a>) &mdash; formerly Newcrest Mining Ltd. &mdash; invested CA$6.34 million in Metallic primarily to advance La Plata.
&quot;Newcrest was one of the first to recognize the potential (of La Plata) following the announcement of our discovery drill results in early 2023&quot; Metallic Minerals Chief Executive Officer Greg Johnson said.

The company announced an expanded NI 43-101 resource in July 2023 for La Plata of 1.2 billion pounds copper (Cu) and 17.6 Moz silver (Ag) at an average grade of 0.41% Cu Eq, 0.37% Cu, and 3.72 g/t Ag, using a 0.25% Cu Eq cutoff grade.
The inaugural resource was based largely on historical drilling from which gold and platinum group element assays were not available. Metallic has stated it expects to add the full suite of precious metals to future resource updates.
These resources and results, combined with those from its flagship Keno property in the Yukon and an alluvial gold production royalty agreement signed with Parker Schnabel of the Discovery Channel&#39;s &quot;Gold Rush&quot; led Couloir Capital to rate the stock a Buy last year.
In an updated research note on September 27, it set a fair value per share estimate of CA$0.74.
Petsel said the company expects to grow the resource for the La Plata project. &quot;Our drill results indicate a significant opportunity for resource expansion and have continued to return both broad zones of mineralization and internal higher-grade zones with considerable precious metal associations showing elevated gold, platinum, and palladium values&quot; he said.
<h2>The Catalyst: Open at Depth, Along Trend</h2>
Metallic Minerals said the main Allard deposit area at La Plata remains open to expansion at depth and along trend. Defining the geometry of the mineralization remains an important focus of follow-up drilling this year. Significant high-grade results were also received in surface rock samples taken from more than 20 different target areas elsewhere across the La Plata project area during the 2023 field season as part of a surface mapping initiative. Three of these areas have advanced to a drill testing stage.
&quot;The 2023 exploration program was a major step forward in our understanding of the higher-grade controls to mineralization in the Allard resource area and in the advancement of several exciting surface target zones that demonstrate percent level copper with precious metals that have never been drill tested&quot; Petsel said.

Total drilling so far has extended mineralization vertically from surface to more than 1.5 kilometers and 1 kilometer along trend and, as noted, is anticipated to allow for inclusion of both gold and platinum group elements in future mineral resource estimates, along with copper and silver, the company said.
An advanced airborne hyperspectral survey covering 157 square kilometers has also been completed at the project, allowing for detailed mineral and alteration mapping across the entire district.
Metallic Minerals said the U.S. Geologic Survey has identified the La Plata mining district as a potential critical minerals resource area under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative program.
<h2>Yukon Flagship Gets Technical Report</h2>
Metallic Minerals also recently filed the National Instrument 43-101 technical report for its inaugural mineral resource estimate for its 100%-owned flagship Keno silver project in the Yukon.
The estimate noted a combined underground and in-pit total from four deposits for the inferred resource of 2.5 million tonnes (Mt) at 223 grams per tonne silver equivalent (g/t Ag Eq), equating to 18.16 million ounces (Moz) of contained silver equivalent.
According to the company, underground inferred mineral resources include the Formo deposit, which contains 12.77 Moz Ag Eq (7.11 Moz Ag, 3,000 ouches gold (Au), 36.02 million pounds (Mlbs) lead (Pb), and 66.14 Mlbs zinc (Zn) within 1.08 Mt grading 369 g/t Ag Eq (206 g/t Ag, 0.08 g/t Au, 1.52% Pb, and 2.79% Zn).
The Formo deposit is directly adjacent to the highway and power lines that feed the central Keno Hill mill, which is operated by Hecla Mining Co. (HL:NYSE), the largest primary silver producer in Canada and the U.S.A., Metallic Minerals said. The Formo deposit directly adjoins Hecla&#39;s Keno Hill property, where Hecla is actively mining the nearby Bermingham deposit.
There has been excitement in the silver market recently, and some analysts are bullish on the metal. After recently correcting from fresh highs of US$29.80, silver rebounded to US$28.78 on Wednesday.
Silver is the most conductive element in nature. It&#39;s also important to the green economy transition because it&#39;s used to coat electrical contacts in computers, phones, cars, and appliances. It&#39;s also an important element in solar technology.
In an update last year, the World Silver Institute said there was a deficit of 140 million ounces (Moz) between supply and demand for silver in 2023, compared to 237.7 Moz in 2022. However, the institute also noted that global output shrunk by 2% in 2023.
&quot;Mined output over the longer term, four to five years out, is forecast to begin to decline&quot; the institute said in its World Silver Survey 2023. &quot;This will be due to losses from grade decline and reserve depletion at existing operations exceeding the new production that is expected to come online from the current project pipeline.&quot;
<h2>Ownership and Share Structure</h2>
About 17% of Metallic Minerals is owned by management and insiders, including CEO Johnson with 4.15 %, Independent Director Gregor Hamilton with 0.92%, and the president, Petsel, with 0.5%.
About 34% is owned by strategic investors, including Newmont&#39;s 9.32% and mining financier Eric Sprott, who owns 14.5%.
About 22% is owned institutionally. The rest, 27%, is retail.
Its market cap is CA$49.3 million, with 166.99 million shares outstanding, 123.02 million free-floating. It trades in a 52-week range of CA$0.44 and CA$0.24.

Gold Glitters On Stagflation Tailwinds: Newmont Soars 13% In Biggest Post-Covid Gain, Leads Mining Sector Surge

Wall Street suffers a double blow in Thursday&#8217;s session, as softer-than-expected revenue forecasts from Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) are being compounded by weaker-than-expected economic growth and higher inflationary pressures last quarter, raising fears of a stagflation phase <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/04/38434513/us-growth-slows-in-q1-yet-inflation-acceleration-signals-stagflation-the-worst-poss">for the U.S. economy.</a>
The U.S. economy grew by a 1.6% annualized pace in Q1 2024, slowing down sharply from the 3.4% pace in the previous quarter and missing expectations of a growth rate of 2.5%. Inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) price index, substantially accelerated from a 1.8% to 3.4% annualized pace, with the underlying measure of core PCE escalating to 3.7%. 
The elite group of Magnificent Seven stocks <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/04/38436183/magnificent-7-tumble-wipe-out-300-billion-on-metas-weak-guidance-q1-stagflation-woes">wiped out nearly $300 billion in market value</a> earlier this morning, prior to marginally curbing losses by 1 p.m. in New York. 
The S&amp;P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 dropped by 1% and 1.2% respectively, while blue chips in the Dow Jones Industrial Average slightly underperformed, declining by 1.4%. 
Meta Platforms experienced a double-digit decline, pulling down both the tech index and the communication services sector, which saw its worst day since late October 2023.
Only a few industries managed to notch gains, with gold miners in the spotlight following stronger-than-expected quarterly results by Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>). The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>) rose 2.7%. 
Gold also saw an increase, rising by 0.7%, outperforming both stocks and bonds amid growing signals of stagflation from the economy. Crude oil inched lower, with the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude down 0.4% to $82 a barrel. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) held steady around $64,500. 
In the bond market, Treasury yields surged, with the policy-sensitive 2-year yields rising to 5% as traders further dialed back expectations of Fed rate cuts.

Gold production fell 4% Y/Y to 1.675 million ounces due to lower output at Tanami on planned mill shutdown and seasonal rainfall impacts and the ongoing stripping campaigns at Boddington and Akyem.&nbsp;

Insights From Analysts:
The growth conundrum of whether the economy is going to see a hard or soft landing, has kept investors skewed toward quality stocks, <a href="https://www.morganstanley.com/ideas/thoughts-on-the-market-wilson?subscribed=true&amp;dis=em_2024424_wm_5ideasarticle&amp;et_mid=585156&amp;et_mkid=&amp;sfmc_id=201810710">said </a>Morgan Stanley&#8217;s Chief Equity Strategist Mike Wilson in a podcast. &#8220;The largest risk for stocks more broadly is higher 10-year Treasury yields as investors begin to demand a larger term premium due to higher inflation and the growing supply of bonds to pay for the endless deficits,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;Our primary concern for equities at this point is that aggressive fiscal spending has led to better economic growth but it keeps upward pressure on inflation and prevents the Fed from cutting interest rates that many economic participants desperately need at this point.&#8221;
The analyst recommended investors look into under-appreciated sectors. &#8220;This is all in-line with our 2024 outlook that suggests the major equity indices are overvalued while the best opportunities are likely beneath the surface in underappreciated sectors like energy that are positively levered to stickier inflation and higher interest rates.&#8221;
Fund Strat&#8217;s Tom Lee, however, is optimistic. In his weekly commentary, the analyst noted that the S&amp;P 500 and equities rebounded over the past two days, rising more than 2%. &#8220;The S&amp;P 500 closed solidly above the critical 5,019.20 to 5,070.55. In our view, this is confirmation that the worst of this two-week decline is behind us,&#8221; he said.
Upcoming Economic Data:
The Bureau of Economic Analysis is due to release its<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/24/04/38405106/us-economy-expected-to-grow-2-5-in-q1-not-a-hard-landing-and-hardly-a-soft-one"> first-quarter GDP data (advance estimate) </a>at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Economists, on average, expect the economy to have expanded 2.2%, slower than the 3.4% pace in the fourth quarter. Traders may also keep an eye on the GDP price deflator and the price consumption expenditure index to gauge inflation trends.
The Labor Department will release the customary jobless claims data at 8:30 a.m. EDT. The number of individuals claiming unemployment benefits is expected at 215,000 for the week ended April 20, up slightly from 212,000 in the previous week.

Shares of precious metals stocks are trading lower amid a pullback in the price of gold and silver.

As the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/04/38342737/nasdaq-100-notches-worst-day-since-late-2023-worst-week-since-late-2022-as-ai-driven-chipmakers-tu">market runs into rough weather,</a> the importance of the upcoming week&#8217;s earnings cannot be emphasized enough. A lot is riding on the earnings reports of companies like Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>), Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) and Alphabet, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (GOOG).
The Season So Far: The percentage of S&amp;P 500 companies that have reported positive earning surprises and the magnitude of earnings surprises are at or above their 10-year averages, <a href="https://insight.factset.com/sp-500-earnings-season-update-april-19-2024?utm_source=Direct&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=FO-04-19-2024&amp;utm_content=httpsinsightfactsetcomsp500earningsseasonupdateapril192024">said</a> FactSet in its report released Friday. That said, substantial downward revisions to earnings per share (EPS) estimates of two healthcare companies have led to a decline in earnings growth over the past two weeks.
The combined earnings per share growth rate of S&amp;P 500 companies, considering both the already reported actual results and the estimates for those yet to report, is at 0.5%, according to FactSet. The metric, however, fell from the 0.9% estimated previous week and the 3.4% estimated at the end of the first quarter. Earnings growth for the quarter may extend the positive growth streak to three quarters.
So far, 14% of the S&amp;P 500 companies have reported March quarter results.

Look Ahead: The upcoming week will likely feature earnings releases from 158 S&amp;P 500 companies, including 11 Dow 30 components. With the bank earnings tapering off, the spotlight shifts to tech companies, as they begin to roll out their quarterly scorecard this week.
Apart from some big techs, which are part of the group called the &#8220;Magnificent Seven,&#8221; homebuilders, defense contractors, airlines and transportation companies are also due to release their quarterly reports. 
All eyes are focused on Tesla as analysts expect a downbeat report from the company. Analysts see the scope of a further contraction in margin and potentially a double miss yet again in the first quarter.
AI stalwarts Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta are widely expected to report strong results. Following the recent tech-led sell-off, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said, &#8220;We believe 1Q earnings will be a major positive catalyst for the tech sector and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/04/38252477/why-microsoft-alphabet-amazon-palantir-and-meta-could-rise-15-in-2024-according-to-">expect tech stocks to be up another 15% for the year</a> adding to the strong start to 2024.&#8221;

US Gold Closes $4.9M Offering; Law Firm Investigates Compass Minerals; Newmont Appoints New CTO And More: Friday's Top Mining Stories

Spot gold was popping up above 0.5% at one point on Tuesday, propelled by escalating tensions in the Middle East following Tehran&rsquo;s decision to deploy hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38240360/what-a-full-blown-war-between-israel-and-iran-could-entail-according-to-one-report">on Saturday night.</a>
Iran&rsquo;s move sparked heightened concerns that a widespread regional could break out, which would have broad negative implications for the global economy.
Gold&rsquo;s break higher on Tuesday, which saw the commodity working back toward the April 12 all-time high of $2,431.78, was pulling the gold mining sector north.

Direxion Daily Gold Miners Index Bull 2X Shares (ARCA: NUGT), which often follows spot gold, was reversing upward from Tuesday&rsquo;s $35.84 low-of-day.
NUGT <a href="https://www.direxion.com/product/daily-gold-miners-bull-bear-2x-etfs">is a double-leveraged fund</a> that is designed to outperform the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index by 200%. The ETF tracks several gold and silver mining companies, with Newmont Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nem#NYSE">NEM</a>), Barrick Gold Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gold#NYSE">GOLD</a>) and Franco-Nevada Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnv#NYSE">FNV</a>) making up 30.05% of its holdings.
It should be noted that leveraged ETFs are meant to be used as a trading vehicle by experienced traders, as opposed to a long-term investment. Leveraged ETFs should never be used by an investor with a buy-and-hold strategy or those who have low-risk appetites.

The NUGT Chart: NUGT rallied about 88% between Feb. 28 and April 12, where the ETF reached an 11-month high of $43.58. On Friday, the ETF retraced on higher-than-average volume and on Monday and Tuesday, the ETF was looked to consolidate on decreasing volume.
<ul>
<li>On Tuesday, NUGT negated its uptrend by printing a lower low under the most recent higher low, which was formed on April 10 at $37.15. Although the uptrend was negated, a downtrend won&rsquo;t be confirmed unless the ETF prints a lower high under the 11-month high.</li>
<li>Also on Tuesday, NUGT was worked to print a dragonfly doji or hammer candlestick, which could indicate the local bottom has occurred and the ETF will rise higher again on Wednesday. If that happens, bulls want to see the ETF regain the eight-day exponential moving average (EMA) as support.</li>
<li>Bearish traders want to see NUGT reject the eight-day EMA and then for big bearish volume to come in and knock the ETF down under Tuesday&rsquo;s low-of-day, which would confirm a new downtrend.</li>
<li>NUGT has resistance above at $37.68 and at $41.31 and support below at $33 and at $28.13.<img alt="screenshot_584.png" src="https://www.benzinga.com/files/u278075/screenshot_584.png" style="height:362px; width:760px" /></li>
