Wall Street witnessed a broad sell-off on Wednesday, except for the tech sector, as investor optimism over disinflation progress cooled following a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/09/40812986/inflation-slows-to-2-5-in-august-lowest-rate-since-february-2021-core-index-remai">mixed August inflation report.</a>
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.5% year-over-year, slightly below the 2.6% estimate and down from July&#8217;s 2.9%, marking the slowest pace of inflation since February 2021. The bulk of this decline came from energy-related categories.
However, core inflation — excluding the more volatile components like food and energy — rose 0.3% month-over-month, surpassing expectations of 0.2%. The annual core CPI remained at 3.2%, reflecting persistent inflation in service-related sectors.
A key driver of inflation continues to be shelter costs, which rose 0.5% from the previous month—the sharpest increase since January — and account for nearly a third of the total CPI.
The report dashed hopes for a Federal Reserve rate cut in the upcoming meeting. Market expectations for a 50-basis-point cut plummeted to just 13%, down from 34% the day before, as per CME FedWatch. 
The inflation data gave the U.S. dollar a lift and nudged Treasury yields higher across the board. Sectors most sensitive to interest rates, such as real estate, materials and financials, led the sell-off.
In contrast, tech stocks defied the broader market slump, driven by strong gains in the semiconductor space. 
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) surged 4.5%, buoyed by the market's reaction to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/09/40817347/donald-trump-lost-debate-to-kamala-harris-will-lose-ground-in-the-polls-polymarket-traders">latest U.S. presidential debate</a> between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. 
The two candidates engaged in a back-and-forth about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/09/40731719/goldman-sachs-kamala-harris-victory-bodes-well-for-us-economy-trump-tariffs-will-drive-up-inflat">tariffs on goods</a>, which would impact inflation and the chipmaking industry.
Solar stocks also rallied, with the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) jumping over 4%, as the prospect of a Harris administration increased <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40817317/solar-shares-climb-as-harris-gains-momentum-post-debate-against-trump-7-top-gainers-in-clean-ene">optimism for renewable energy policies.</a> First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>) was the top performer within the industry, jumping over 12%. 
Elsewhere, gold remained flat, while oil prices rebounded over 2% after Tuesday&#8217;s sell-off. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) dropped more than 2%.

GameStop Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) shares are moving lower on Wednesday after the company reported a revenue miss for the 2024 fiscal year <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40803991">second quarter</a>.
What Happened: The company reported revenue of $798 million missing analysts estimate of $895.67 million. 
The company reported $451.2 million from Hardware and Accessories, $207.7 million from Software and $139.4 million from Collectibles.
In addition, the company reported EPS of four cents beating analysts estimate of a loss of 1 cent per share. GameStop also reported net income of $14.8 million as well as cash and cash equivalents of $4.204 billion.
Analyst Change: Following the earnings report, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter maintained a Underperform rating on GameStop and lowered his price target from $11 to $10.

What's Going On With GameStop Shares Wednesday?

A GameStop Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) analyst is questioning why the video game retailer is trading at a premium to its cash as it works through managing operating losses, but provided no strategy in its<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/09/40803991/gamestop-q2-earnings-highlights-revenue-miss-eps-beat-cash-update-and-more"> second-quarter earnings report.</a>
The GameStop Analyst: Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter reiterated an Underperform rating on GameStop and lowered the price target from $11 to $10.

The Analyst Takeaways: The video game retailer shows a sequential improvement to profit in the second quarter, Pachter said.
The analyst is skeptical of GameStop's future with a lack of strategy or concern for shareholders.
"While we admire GameStop's ability to manage operating losses, we think it would be just as reasonable for management to close all of its stores and operate as a bank," Pachter said.
GameStop has around $10 per share in cash and shares trade for roughly two times that figure, Pachter added.
"Without a hint of any strategy that would reasonably deploy capital, we do not see why shares trade at 2x cash."
The video game retailer announced accelerated store closures, but without more commentary on strategy, Pachter said the company is "no longer beholden to shareholder interests."
Pachter said the store closures will result in further revenue declines and could also hurt profitability.
GameStop faces headwinds of the shift of physical video games going digital, declining video game sales, growth of subscription services and hardware sales declining, the analyst added.
"GME shares trade at a level that ignores the company's many challenges ahead."
The $10 price target from Pachter covers the cash level of the company. The analyst once had a $1.50 price target before cash raises with the company viewed with short-term bankruptcy risks.
"Without any indication that the company plans a turnaround, we remain reluctant to assume that it can and will. Instead, it appears to be moving further away from any shareholder accountability."
GME Price Action: GameStop stock is down over 14.7% to $20.03 at last check on Wednesday versus a 52-week trading range of $9.95 to $64.83. GameStop shares are up 25% year-to-date in 2024.

GameStop Reports Weak Sales, Joins Petco, Relay Therapeutics And Other Big Stocks Moving Lower In Wednesday's Pre-Market Session

GameStop shares are trading lower following a Q2 revenue miss.

Index futures are sporting caution early Wednesday as the market prepares to receive the all-important August consumer price inflation report. Vice President Kamala Harris is widely considered as the <a href="https://dash.parsely.com/benzinga.com/posts/uvH2BRT1nTC-trump-vs-harris-debates-results-are-in-flash-poll-shows-resounding-majority-pick-vice-president-as/?minutes=10">winner of the presidential debate </a>held between her and Republican candidate Donald Trump late Tuesday, and this could prove to be slightly market-negative, given the former president is viewed as market-friendly. That said, there are specific sectors that could capitalize on the outcome, including green energy stocks.
The major market-moving catalyst for the day, however, is going to be the August consumer price inflation report, which along with Thursday&#8217;s producer price inflation report could be key inputs the Federal Reserve will look into as they make their interest rate decision following the conclusion of a two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting next Wednesday.

In premarket trading on Wednesday, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) moved down 0.25% to $547.50 and the Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) slipped 0.29% to $457.35, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro data</a>.
Cues From Last Session:
U.S. stocks closed Tuesday&#8217;s session on a mixed note as risk aversion perked up following Oracle Corp.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>) strong results and the implication it had for the artificial intelligence trades. The major averages started on a firm footing but lost their momentum mid-way through, as they dipped below the unchanged line by the mid-session.
 The mid-session weakness stemmed from a pullback in financial stocks after JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) gave a muted outlook at an industry conference. Energy stocks also served as drags after the WTI-grade crude oil futures plunged over 4%.
Stocks, however, staged a strong recovery, with the Nasdaq Composite and S&amp;P indices closing higher for the second straight day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average settled modestly lower.

Insights From Analysts:
Fund manager Louis Navellier said in a note to clients that he expects a positive CPI report for August, premising his expectation on the shelter costs potentially continuing to moderate. He also looks ahead to a favorable producer price inflation report on Thursday as wholesale service and good costs have been soft. As a result, he expects Treasury yields to move lower.
The slower pace of the PPI inflation than the CPI inflation is due to the fact that the U.S. continues to import deflation from China, he said.
A strategist said there could be a bit of pullback, given the market is in a seasonally weak period and it is the election year. Fund Strat Global Head of Technical Strategy Mark Newton said given the fact that sentiment is not as optimistic as he would want to see, it&#8217;s going to be a hiccup. Weighing in on the headwinds, he noted that the current presidential election is highly contentious and divisive and there are two wars overseas. &#8220;Earnings though have been remarkably good and the stock market itself has been good,&#8221; he noted.
&#8220;I do suspect we probably pull back a little bit further even over the next week you can&#8217;t rule that out. So maybe to 53 and change uh then I think we probably start to turn higher after the Fed meeting,&#8221; he said.

Apprehension ahead of the U.S. inflation data also kept sentiment muted in the region. The European markets are seeing modest strength, although the U.K. market was slightly weaker amid the release of a slew of soft domestic economic data.

Wall Street Poised For Pullback Ahead Of August CPI Data: Strategist Says Further Dip Likely Before Rally Resumes Following Next Week's Fed Meeting

Shares of Dave &amp; Buster&#8217;s Entertainment, Inc. GameStop&#8217;s<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/09/40803991/gamestop-q2-earnings-highlights-revenue-miss-eps-beat-cash-update-and-more"> net sales for the quarter </a>were $798.0 million, falling short of the $895.7 million consensus estimate.
What Happened: GameStop&#8217;s revenue saw a decline from $1.16 billion in the same quarter last year. Despite the revenue miss, the company posted a profit of $0.1 per share, surpassing the expected loss of $0.9 per share.
At the time of writing, GameStop was trading at $20.85 while it closed at $23.45 on Tuesday, as per <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

Energy and financial sectors are witnessing deeper losses, sharply underperforming the rest of the market. 
In the latest monthly report, OPEC revised its global oil demand growth forecasts downward, now expecting 2024 oil demand to increase by 2.03 million barrels per day (bpd), down from the previous estimate of 2.1 million bpd. For 2025, OPEC has trimmed global demand growth forecast to 1.74 million bpd, compared to the earlier projection of 1.78 million bpd.
On the regulatory front, Federal Reserve Board Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr announced changes to the BASEL III and GSIB (Global Systemically Important Banks) surcharge proposals, which will now increase capital requirements for the largest banks by 9%, down from the original plan of 19%. Barr also clarified that banks with assets under $250 billion would largely be exempt from these heightened requirements.
Despite this capital relief, financial stocks sank across the board. The financial sector gauge fell 2%, with JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) dropping 7%. The SPDR Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) declined 2.6%, reflecting ongoing pressure even on the regional bank industry which is largely exempted from the regulation.

On the economic data front, U.S. wholesale inventories increased by 0.2% month-over-month to $903.5 billion in July compared to a preliminary reading of a 0.3% rise, and versus a revised flat reading a month ago.
All sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with industrials, information technology and consumer discretionary stocks recording the biggest gains on Monday.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 484 points to 40,829.59 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 1.16% to 5,471.05, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.16% at 16,884.60 during Monday's session.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) and Dave &amp; Buster&#8217;s Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLAY#NASDAQ">PLAY</a>) today.

At a current reading of 42.1, the index remained in the &#8220;Fear&#8221; zone on Monday, versus a prior reading of 39.3.
The Fear &amp; Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.
