The prevalence of depression – a sad mood that lasts for a long time and interferes with normal, everyday functioning – among children has increased by 89% from 2004 to 2020, while the rate of treatment has only nominally increased.1 The prevalence of mental health conditions among adults has increased by 19% from 2008 to 2020, including nearly 21 million adults who have depression.2 Rates of depression are higher among certain groups like younger adults, females and people who are multi-racial. 3

In the United States, suicide claimed the lives of almost 46,000 people in 2020.5 It is the second leading cause of death for children aged 10–14 and adults aged 35–44, and the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15–24. 6
