While the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't officially start until June 1st, Hurricane Preparedness Week takes place in just a few weeks. May 1st through the 7th are the 2022 dates for this year's Hurricane Preparedness Week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reminds everyone that lives in hurricane-prone areas, such as Puerto Rico, to be ready for hurricane season. The agency encourages people to determine their personal hurricane risk, find out if they live in a hurricane evacuation zone, and review/update insurance policies. NOAA also suggests people make a list of items to replenish in their hurricane emergency supplies and to start thinking about how they will prepare their property for the coming hurricane season.

In recent times, a number of powerful hurricanes have hit Puerto Rico and other islands across the Caribbean. These storms have caused deaths, destruction and billions of dollars in property damage. While some properties are completely destroyed by a powerful hurricane, many others survive with varying degrees of damage.

Fortunately, many of these properties can be repaired, but there are potential environmental hazards people need to be aware of before rebuilding begins. Any water damage can allow for mold growth in as short as 24 to 48 hours on most building materials, furnishings and personal belongings. Due to this fact, it is important to begin drying materials as soon as it is safe to do so after a storm. Some nonporous materials can be cleaned and salvaged, but most porous materials should be discarded if mold growth is present.

“Flooding caused by a hurricane can also bring more than just rainwater into a property,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Floodwaters often contain viruses, bacteria and chemical contaminants. Many older properties in Puerto Rico also contain asbestos and lead-based paints which can present a threat to anyone in the building during cleanup and repair activities. These are all reasons the building science, industrial hygiene and indoor air quality professionals at Zimmetry are available to help businesses and property owners following a hurricane or tropical storm. Our staff is available to rapidly respond to help safely reopen damaged buildings without risking the health and safety of families, workers and any future building occupants.”
