New Paper-thin Flexpoint Battery Expansion Sensor measures Expansion and Temperature of Lithium Ion Batteries Preventing Thermal Runaway in Rechargeable Devices

DRAPER, UT / ACCESSWIRE / November 12, 2019 / The Battery Expansion Sensor, or BXS, a newly patented product by Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. FLXT that is designed to detect and stop thermal runaway and or possible fire and explosion in Lithium Ion batteries has gained global interest after an outbreak of fires and exploding smart devices. Last month alone in the U.S. there were five cases of battery fires and or explosions caused by thermal runaway. In Kazakhstan, a sleeping fourteen-year-old was killed while charging a phone on her pillow.

According to data collected by the website, bankmycell.com, there are currently over 9.3 billion mobile connections in the world; more than the global population of 7.7 billion. Many people own or use more than one smart device, phone or tablet. But these numbers don't begin take into account the Lithium-Ion batteries used in everything from cameras and vaping devices to electric cars. Flexpoint's patented BXS constantly and consistently measures the expansion or swelling of a Lithium Ion battery as well as the temperature, with a paper-thin patented sensor that will shut down a short circuit before the battery can become dangerous.

In the month of October 2019, smart tablets in two separate North Carolina classrooms caught fire while charging. In Utah, a classroom was devastated by a fire caused by another charging tablet, endangering the students, causing damage and school closure. A school bus fire caused by a laptop, forced the driver to pull over in Massachusetts and evacuate the children. As of October 2019, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has reported 252 airport/airplane incidents involving Lithium Ion battery emergencies. And after a recent dive boat explosion in California that took the lives of 34 people, the U.S. Coast Guard has issued a safety bulletin recommending boat operators limit the unsupervised charging of Lithium Ion batteries.

"With the demand for batteries to be slimmer, cheaper and operate at a higher capacity while packed into thinner packaging, any number of variables can cause the flammable electrolyte inside to heat up and spiral out of control causing a thermal runaway," said Dave Beck, Flexpoint Director of Engineering. "All Lithium Ion batteries swell to some extent, as batteries are designed to contain as a failsafe the measure of outgassing. The Flexpoint BXS detects the expansion of the battery as well as the temperature beyond the safe zone, shutting down the circuit and putting the battery into limp mode while sending a message to the user that the device is unsafe."

No one agency tracks Lithium Ion battery incidents and countless go unreported or are unknown. Many Lithium Ion batteries are produced in countries outside the U.S. where it can be difficult to know if corners have been cut during production. The Flexpoint Battery Expansion Sensor, when properly utilized, can detect the temperature and swelling of any Lithium Ion battery regardless of where it was manufactured. Counterfeit batteries that are unsafe can be shut down immediately via the BXS, saving the product and a potential hazard.

"The Flexpoint BXS is unique in that it is one of a kind in the market. Accurately measuring not only the expansion of the battery, but also the temperature, our sensor has to potential to save not only the consumer's device and property, but also lives," said Flexpoint CEO Clark Mower. "The micron-thin sensor fits seamlessly into the ever-shrinking space of the newest slim devices."

Flexpoint Sensor Systems has signed non-disclosure agreements in the past months with many top worldwide producers of slim and smart devices.

"Lithium Ion batteries are incredibly efficient and are in use in billions of products," said Mower. "Our goal is simply to keep those batteries in check, ensuring safety for the user. In addition, we anticipate significant increase in revenue as a result of these agreements leading to purchase orders, beginning in the fourth quarter."
