Experienced caregiver and spiritual seeker Dr. Liso Makarius Starrett published her book “Separations - Necessary Evils?: A Memoir” (iUniverse; 2014). This book will be displayed at the Miami Book Fair 2019 Street Fair on November 22-24, 2019 at Miami Dade College (Wolfson Campus) in Downtown Miami, Florida.

“Separations” is a compilation of the author's and her patients' experiences of separations. Her first separation took place when she was four or five years old. Her father was sent to a work camp during World War II. “It was the time of the bombings of Vienna,” said Dr. Starrett, “when the rest of the family moved to the country, near the Czech border, to live with my grandparents.

“I missed him very much.”

Though the separation was temporary, the experience did lead her to reflect on how she handled the whole thing. “In a further reflection, it (the separation) could also be considered a sacramental act as it included a small sacrifice as part of the offering,” she said. “Sacraments are often described as outwardly visible signs of an inward and spiritual grace in this case a deep emotional bond.”

“Separations” is written to help readers see their separations as opportunities for transformation and healing. Her experiences as a caregiver and chaplain having interacted with countless people in their moments of separation and longing helped her shaped her insights as well as her spirituality. The book encourages readers to experience the power and purpose of separations in their lives and, above all, to walk alongside others in their longing for healing and spiritual self-discovery.
