The new Yamaha instruments will impact more than 200 students who now participate in music programs at West Harrison High School

GULFPORT, Miss (PRWEB) April 18, 2019

West Harrison High School received a significant boost yesterday from Yamaha Corporation of America, who donated more than $30,000 worth of new percussion and wind instruments to the school's music program.

The generous gift from the world's largest instrument manufacturer was made in support of the district's growth of their instrumental music programs and facilitated by local instrument dealer, Mississippi Music, Inc. The new instruments will impact more than 200 students who now participate in music programs at West Harrison High School.

The instruments were presented during a special ceremony held on April 17 at West Harrison High School. Rosi Johnson, president/CEO, Mississippi Music; and Scott Slocum, district manager, Yamaha Corporation of America made the presentation to Tim Garrett, director of bands, West Harrison High School; and Ayatey Shabazz owner and CEO, Devmusic Company.

"We are extremely grateful to be blessed with this opportunity and it is very important to us to be able to take care of our students and provide them with quality instruments," says Garrett. "They are currently gearing up for their first-ever performance in the Tournament of Roses Parade next year, and this donation will greatly support their preparation, as well as their future in music."

In recent years, student involvement in the band program at West Harrison High School has increased significantly. With positive growth comes the need to provide new students with the tools to sustain and support their education in instrumental music. The school was faced with the obstacle of financing new equipment, including large purchases of percussion and wind instruments, to shape the bands and reach their highest potential. This donation will assist the school in providing for its growing music program and offer new opportunities to the students of West Harrison High School they would not otherwise afford.

"We are excited to see such a premier manufacturer as Yamaha strongly support our local schools and honored to be associated with their generous donation," says Johnson. "Yamaha is a great partner in our common goal of creating more music makers."

"Supporting music education has always been at the heart of everything we do at Yamaha. Music programs provide a springboard for academic and personal success, and we are dedicated to providing substantial tools to music teachers so they can continue to support young musicians' future success in life," said Lisa Steele-MacDonald, director of marketing, Yamaha Corporation of America. "We understand the struggle to replace worn and heavily used instruments, which is why this donation by Yamaha to the district is important. We hope this helps in continuing the student's involvement in music and assists them in reaching their highest potential."
