PORTLAND, Maine (PRWEB) June 17, 2018

Javier Garat, a leading advocate for Spanish fisheries interests around the world, will give the opening address at the SeaWeb Seafood Summit, taking place June 18-21 at Hotel Arts Barcelona.

Garat has served at the helm of several seafood industry associations throughout the EU. He is the current president of Europe's International Coalition of Fisheries Associations (ICFA) and of the EU's Association of National Organizations of Fishing Enterprises (Europêche), and also heads up Capesca, a Spanish fishing confederation. He has been the voice of the industry in public forums including the European Parliament and the UN, and regularly lectures on sustainability and environmental management topics at several universities and institutes.

In his #SWSS18 talk, scheduled for Tuesday, June 19, at 9:00 a.m., Garat will welcome attendees and set the tone for three busy days of conversations and progress among sustainable seafood stakeholders. Since the mid-2000s, Garat has been an advocate for balanced environmentally and economically sustainable fishing regulations within the EU. He has made recent headlines for his public statements that such measures have been paying off in Spain, resulting in higher catches, better economic performance, and reduction of fuel consumption.

"Javier Garat is one of the most highly regarded voices in the Spanish seafood industry, and I'm delighted that he'll be joining us at SeaWeb Seafood Summit and welcoming this year's attending professionals," said Brenna Hensley, event director for Diversified Communications. "His work on behalf of Spain and EU fisheries serves as a beacon for other regions and is one of the reasons we're proud to bring the Summit to Barcelona this year."
