BlumShapiro Participating in the Fifth Annual JA Career Walk in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (PRWEB) May 14, 2018

Nearly 30 students from West Hartford's Hall High School and Conard High School and Farmington High School will get an inside look at the range of businesses and career opportunities in West Hartford Center in the 5th Annual JA Career Walk on May 21.

Created in 2014 by BlumShapiro, PBI Financial Group and Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, the JA Career Walk seeks to prepare students for choosing a potential career by gaining a better understanding of job opportunities in their own community.

"The JA Career Walk is a vital learning experience for students and their teachers, as well as an investment in future workforce development for businesses in West Hartford Center and other communities," said Joseph A. Kask, chief executive officer of BlumShapiro. "The day gives students an up-close look at what makes our businesses successful, from the people up front to the operations. In the back. This comprehensive view opens many students' eyes."

Participants from the three high schools will visit a variety of West Hartford Center establishments – accounting, banking, finance, marketing, retail, and food and beverage – beginning at 8:00 a.m. The program begins and ends at BlumShapiro, located at 29 South Main Street.

At the start of the JA Career Walk students receive an orientation using the JA Job Shadow curriculum. The curriculum gives students an overview of the world of work and the skills needed to succeed on the job. The orientation will be hosted by Tom DeVitto, Chief Marketing Officer of BlumShapiro and co-founder of the JA Career Walk.

"The goal of JA Career Walk is to provide a realistic look into the types of businesses and careers that students may not be aware of, even in their own home towns. Also, it's a great opportunity to meet and interact with professionals who share a wealth of information about career development and opportunities," said DeVitto.

Joining the JA Career Walk orientation at BlumShapiro will be David Griggs, president and CEO of MetroHartford Alliance.

In addition to BlumShapiro, other businesses confirmed to date welcoming the students during the JA Career Walk in West Hartford Center are Bridgewater Chocolates, Charles Schwab, Farmington Bank, Iris Photography, Keily Mira Law Firm and Lux Bond & Green.

Each business will provide an overview and tour, and discuss the type of occupations they employ and qualities they look for when hiring people. Each visit will last 40 minutes. The program ends at 12:30 p.m.

Since its inception in West Hartford, JA Career Walks have been organized in Hartford and New Haven.

JA focuses on making students financially responsible, prepared for the workforce and entrepreneurially savvy. JA of Southwest New England reached more than 43,000 students last year, the most in the organization's history.
