Conference Allows Practitioners to Continue Education While Exploring New Ideas
17 CME credits are offered at the 3-day Integrative Healthcare Symposium

Every year, most U.S. medical practitioners are required to complete a minimum number of Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours — courses they can select at their discretion to stay on top of new developments in their fields. Requirements typically range between 20 and 50 hours per year, depending upon the practitioner's location and license type. At the Integrative Healthcare Symposium, taking place Feb. 22-24 at the New York Hilton Midtown, attendees can earn up to 17 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits in just three days, while also exploring new, promising, and proven approaches to patient care.

In sessions approved by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai and facilitated by a diverse group of leading researchers and practicing doctors, Integrative Healthcare Symposium attendees will hear the science behind emerging integrative approaches their patients are asking about – from detoxification protocols to ketogenic diets, meditation, and more.

CME sessions are divided into seven tracks: public health; nutrition; the aging population; mind, body & mood; pain & pain management; nurse corner; and a general track covering various integrative approaches.

The Public Health track will explore topics of societal significance and scale, from issues surrounding environmental toxins, to new heart disease prevention approaches, to the concept of group visits and more. Notable sessions include Environmental Toxins and Neurodegeneration, led by 2018 Integrative Healthcare Symposium Leadership Award recipient Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, ND and Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Cardiovascular Health — Confessions of An Integrative Cardiologist, led by Dennis Goodman, MD, Director of Integrative Medicine at New York University.

The Nutrition track will explore the optimal human diet, including whether one best diet even exists, or if, as with many integrative healthcare approaches, the best protocol varies from patient to patient. On Thursday, Feb. 22, a panel of experts (John Lewis, Ph.D.; Robb Wolf, Dominic D'Agostino, Ph.D.; and David Perlmutter, MD) will discuss the benefits of three approaches: the paleo diet, the vegetarian lifestyle, and therapeutic ketosis. And the following day's program will open with a session led by Mark Hyman, MD, titled Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?

Information found in the Aging Population track will bust myths related to the aging process and break down barriers to better health at any age. Notable sessions include Aging is not a Disease with Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., and Leveraging Lifestyle for Brain Health with David Perlmutter, MD. Scientist and researcher Marc Milstein, Ph.D. will also present the latest cutting-edge findings on Alzheimers and Dementia, including proactive steps patients can take to lower their risk of both.

As with aging, integrative approaches to Pain Management are showing promising positive outcomes. This track explores a variety of alternatives to opioids, in sessions like The Science Behind Acupuncture and Pain Management with Kelly Armstrong OTR/L, SIPT, MP, and an integrative pain panel featuring Drs. Michael Cronin, ND; Gerard Clum, DC; Michael Kurisu, D.O.; and Bill Reddy, L.AC., DIPL.AC.

The General Track will dive into tactics and approaches that could improve patient care across the spectrum of practice areas. Notable sessions include the conference keynote by Deepak Chopra, MD, titled The Future of Wellbeing, and David Brady, ND, DC, CCN, DACBN on An Integrative and Proactive Approach to Autoimmune Disease.

The Mind, Body, Mood track is unique in its dual focus on the metal state of both the patient and the practitioner. Notable sessions include Burnout Syndrome with Nancy Gahles, DC, CCH, MBSR and Lorraine Gahles-Kildow, Ph.D., and Energy Meditations for Professional Self-care with Ching-Tse Lee, Ph.D, Bonney Schaub, RN, MS, PMHCNS-BC, NC-BC, and Richard Schaub, Ph.D.

And in the Nurse Corner track, experts will explore the latest innovations in and approaches to integrative nursing and nurse coaching. Notable sessions include Transforming Healthcare Through Innovative Partnerships led by Susan Penque Ph.D, RN, CNP, Deborah Mcelligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDE, Dena Alberti, MSN, RN-BC, and Joanne Turnier, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC, HN-BC, HWNC-BC, CT and Illness and Spirituality: Transpersonal Nurse Coaching Skills, led by Mary Beth White, MS, RN, APHN-BC, HWNC-BC and Bonney Schaub, RN, MS, PMHCNS-BC, NC-BC.

In addition to the main conference program, practitioners can network with each other and the leaders in their fields at the Meet the Speakers Reception & Book Signing on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Other non-CME highlights include daily early-morning yoga (new this year), mid-day stretching/meditation classes, a bustling exhibit hall, and opportunities to casually connect during breaks and at the Relax & Recharge Lounge.
