Florida Hospital Tampa Expands Neuroscience Program to Become the Brain and Spine Institute

The newly updated program offers care for patients with cranial and back issues ranging from headaches and back pain to brain and spine surgeries.

Florida Hospital Tampa is expanding care to patients with head, neck, and back issues with its Brain & Spine Institute. Formerly known as the Neuroscience Institute, the hospital's updated offering adds specialists to diagnose and treat headaches and back pain, which can sometimes be caused by serious neurological issues.

Joining the Brain & Spine Institute are Sandra Pinilla, MD, Headache and Migraine Specialist and Geoffrey Cronen, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon. In July, the USF Department of Neurosurgery will welcome Jayson Sack, MD, Neurosurgeon, to their practice location on the campus of Florida Hospital Tampa.

The full-color, three-dimensional virtual reality models allow patients to see issues such as tumors or malformations within the context of their bodies. Powered by technology from healthcare virtual-reality pioneers Surgical Theater, these models are fully interactive and can be viewed on a large touch-screen monitor or with virtual-reality goggles. These advanced imaging models provide highly detailed views of a patient's anatomy, including blood vessels and bones, allowing surgeons to take patients to the exact location of their condition and show them the path that will be taken during surgery. The addition of the spine library complements cranial virtual reality imaging currently offered by Surgical Reality.
