Irvine divorce attorney David Goldberg lists the top four tips regarding what couples should know when considering a divorce.

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) June 05, 2017

According to the Pew Research Center, the divorce rate has roughly doubled since the 1990s among U.S. adults ages 50 and older. Furthermore, the divorce rate for those younger than 50 is about twice as high as it is for adults 50 and older.

"Unfortunately, divorce is quite common in our society," said David Goldberg, principal attorney of The Goldberg Legal Group, which focuses on divorce and family law. "Although it is painful and emotionally turbulent, there are critical things people should be aware of when divorcing."

Goldberg, who has been practicing law for more than fifteen years, lists the following four key points couples should know when seeking a divorce:

No. 1: Financial ramifications. Divorces are not just expensive; they are more financially difficult than couples initially realize. The process of a legal divorce involves dividing any joint assets including bank accounts, retirement accounts, and real estate. They also have to transition from living on one joint income to each party having their own separate income. "It really makes each party take a serious look and assess their own personal finances," noted Goldberg.

No. 2: The more involved a couple is, the more planning is involved in the divorce process. There are generally more issues to resolve in a long term marriage, from acquiring assets to having children."This means each party reclaiming and understanding their own finances, as well as coming to mutual agreements on what is best for the child/children when children and custody are involved," added Goldberg.

No. 3: Identify if there is a need for legal assistance through a consultation. "A lot of couples think they can proceed with a divorce just from information online without having knowledge of the law. This is just not the case," stressed Goldberg. "Odds are, if the couple owns anything significant or has any children, they will need legal assistance."

No. 4: Upon seeking divorce, do not assume the marriage is business as usual. "Although disillusioning, your spouse might not have your best interest at heart anymore, and this is why legal assistance is key in making sure the divorce is properly handled by an objective third party," concluded Goldberg. "During a divorce, spouses usually no longer share common personal and financial goals."
