David R. Bradford, Carl R. Kjeldsberg and John M. Matsen to Be Inducted into UTC Hall of Fame

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Utah Technology Council (UTC) (http://www.utahtech.org) today announced David R. Bradford, Carl R. Kjeldsberg and John M. Matsen as its 2013 inductees into the UTC Hall of Fame. The technology industry will gather on October 11 to celebrate their more than 100 years of combined success at the UTC's Hall of Fame Celebration at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO of Adobe Systems, Inc., will keynote the Hall of Fame Celebration – the industry's premier gathering of technology and life science executives.

“Our 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees have achieved remarkable success in their careers,” said Richard R. Nelson, president and CEO of the UTC. “They have built great companies that are known throughout the nation and the world. They represent Utah very well. They deserve the distinction of being named to the UTC Hall of Fame.”

2013 Inductees:

David R. Bradford – Software Industry Leader, Connector, Advisor and Entrepreneur

David R. Bradford is a proven business leader with over 30 years of experience in the computer industry. Known for accelerating the growth and performance of game-changing organizations, Mr. Bradford is Executive Chairman of HireVue. In this role, Mr. Bradford leads the board and guides the future of HireVue as it pioneers the digital interviewing market to bring faster, convenient, standardized interviews to businesses around the world.

Until February 2013, Mr. Bradford served as CEO of HireVue. During his tenure as CEO, company sales increased over 200%, the company raised over $22 million in capital, and was awarded the prestigious HR product of the Year becoming the de facto standard in digital interviewing.

Prior to his work at HireVue, Mr. Bradford served as CEO and Chairman of Fusion-io FIO, a pioneer of a new storage memory platform, significantly improving performance in the world's data centers. In this role, he sourced and brought together an S-1 ready management team, helped raise over $100 million in growth equity, sourced and recruited Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple, to become the company's Chief Scientist, helped secure key strategic partnerships with IBM, HP and Samsung, drove a massive increase in sales and saw the company named America's Most Promising I.T. Company by the Wall Street Journal and America's “most innovative” company by Businessweek.

From 1985-2000, Mr. Bradford served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Novell, Inc. NOVL, where he helped lead the networking start-up through a series of acquisitions, public offerings and business development activities.

A “people connector” and an expert in social media, Bradford has a book forthcoming about building real relationships with people in a world of social media.

He is the recipient of numerous honors and distinctions, including the 2010 Utah Technology Council Executive of the Year award and the BYU Law School Alumnus of the Year award. He not only earned his law degree from Brigham Young University but his bachelor's degree in Political Science as well. His MBA degree is from Pepperdine University.

John M. Matsen, III - Clinician, Laboratorian and Administrator

Born in Salt Lake City, John M. Matsen attended Brigham Young University and UCLA Medical School. Following his internship and residency at UCLA and Harbor General Hospital, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in infectious diseases in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Dr. Matsen then served as director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories and remained at the University of Minnesota for an additional six years, rising to the rank of professor of Laboratory Medicine, of Pediatrics, and of Microbiology.

Returning to Salt Lake City in 1974 as a professor of Pathology and Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Dr. Matsen served as director of the Clinical Laboratories for University Hospital until 1978 and as director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories from 1974 to 1993. He had a long and illustrious career at the University of Utah; his past titles include associate dean for Academic Affairs, 12 years as chair of the Department of Pathology, dean of the School of Medicine, university senior vice president for Health Sciences, and emeritus professor of Pathology and Pediatrics.

Dr. Matsen was one of the founders of ARUP Laboratories, a nonprofit, academic enterprise of the University of Utah Department of Pathology. He was ARUP's founding CEO and president from 1984 to 1993 and served as chair of ARUP's board of directors from 1993 to 1999.

His many national responsibilities, recognitions, and awards include a two-year term as the president of the (national) Association of Pathology Chairs, the Becton Dickinson Award, Gerald T. Evans Award, Sonnenwirth Award, Utah Medical Association Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Alumni Award (BYU), and Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service. In 2001, Dr. Matsen received the Honorary Member Award from the American Society for Microbiology, given annually to only three of the society's 40,000-plus members. He is also the recipient of the 2002 Laboratory Public Service National Leadership Award for Lifetime Achievement and is a 2006 recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Utah. Dr. Matsen has authored 216 published scientific articles/chapters and 122 published abstracts. Since March 2000, he has served in a volunteer capacity on several health-related missionary health committees for the LDS church.

Carl R. Kjeldsberg – Scientist, Teacher, Entrepreneur

Born in Trondheim, Norway, Carl R. Kjeldsberg attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where he received his medical degree in 1966. He completed a rotating internship and a pathology residency at General Rose Memorial Hospital in Denver, Colorado, before transferring to the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he directed the Department of Pathology hematology section from 1971 to 1974. In 1974, Dr. Kjeldsberg was appointed director of the Clinical Laboratories at the University of Utah Hospital and chief of the Department of Pathology at the Salt Lake VA Hospital.

Dr. Kjeldsberg's work has focused on improving the delivery of clinical laboratory medicine to patients in the United States. Currently a professor of pathology and medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, he was one of the founders of ARUP Laboratories, where he served as president and CEO (1993–2009) and as chairman of the board (2003–2011). He also served as chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah from 1993 to 2004.

While at ARUP, Dr. Kjeldsberg was passionate about his focus on employee work-life balance. Under his leadership, ARUP won several awards and honors, including Fortune Magazine 100 Best Companies to Work For, Utah's Top 10 Family-Friendly Companies Award, and American Psychological Association's Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award. Dr. Kjeldsberg started ARUP's Wellness Center and its on-site Childcare Center, which is still subsidized by ARUP. He also initiated The Institute for Learning and the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology.

Dr. Kjeldsberg has served on the University of Utah Hospital Foundation board of directors; the medical board and Clinical Sciences Council at the University of Utah's School of Medicine; the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation board of directors; and the Utah Museum of Natural History board of directors.

Dr. Kjeldsberg has published more than 50 books and book chapters and over 150 scientific articles in the fields of pathology and hematopathology, and has presented these research findings at numerous national and international conferences.

From 1972 until 1988, Dr. Kjeldsberg worked as a racing coach for the Snowbird and Solitude ski teams. As part of Salt Lake's Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School, he founded the Rowmark Ski Academy in 1982, serving as its chairman from 1984 to 1985. An active skier and bicyclist, Dr. Kjeldsberg is as passionate about life as he is about medicine.
