Empowering Young People Through Hands-on Experience

Norcross, GA (PRWEB) March 28, 2012

Reed Construction Data and Hanley Wood will join forces with Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) and national sponsors on May 16, 2012, for projectDC, a planned site renovation project to benefit at-risk and homeless youths in the Washington, D.C., area.

projectDC will support the renovation and expansion of an abandoned building, donated to Sasha Bruce Youthwork for use as service-enriched transitional housing. The goal of the renovation is to convert a community eyesore into an energy-efficient transitional home for homeless young people seeking to develop skills for their future. Reed Construction Data and Hanley Wood are helping raise much needed funds and in-kind donations for the project and providing volunteers to assist Sasha Bruce students with the actual construction.

“The projectDC partnership is a unique opportunity for the private sector and non-profit to unite in support of Sasha Bruce's efforts,” stated Steve Ritchie, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Reed Construction Data. “The project will engage young people from SBY programs, giving them hands-on experience during the construction process. When complete, the house will provide these young people a safe place to stay, study and learn while pursuing scholastic and career opportunities.”

Sasha Bruce Youthwork is a private non-profit youth and family services agency introduced to Reed Construction Data by Keri-Lyn Coleman, founder of Collaborative Planning Group, LLC. SBY's YouthBuild Program has an outstanding record of classroom and worksite-based education and apprenticeships that result in marketable job skills and work credentials to keep young people involved and active in their communities.

“Our workforce development program has extensive experience in training young adults in construction trades,” stated Jim Beck, MNA, SBY's Director of Development. “Of trainees entering our SBY YouthBuild workforce development program over the past eight years, none had completed high school, and all were unemployed. Despite these challenges, 100% of those completing the program received nationally-recognized construction industry certification.”

As many as 150 volunteers from Reed Construction Data and Hanley Wood will work with Sasha Bruce staff and students on May 16, 2012, to help convert the Marshall Heights structure into a home-like environment, with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, offices and community space. Architects Stovall Smith Neyman and Associates and General Contractor Superior Home Services are providing expertise for the project, and sponsoring building product manufacturers are donating materials, as well as services.

“We appreciate the opportunity to work with a non-profit of Sasha Bruce Youthwork's caliber and are honored to be a part of a volunteer effort that will bring meaningful improvement to the lives of those young people we're helping through this project,” stated Steve Ritchie.

Corporate sponsorships are still available. Join projectDC now to make a difference in the lives of at-risk young people, while gaining company and brand visibility.
