Seiko Instruments Introduces World's Lowest Power Consumption Temperature Switch IC

-S-5844 series temperature switch IC improves mobile device safety and reliability-

PR Newswire

TOKYO, June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) announced on June 15 the S-5844 series, the world's lowest power consumption 180nA temperature switch IC. The series features 1.65V low operating voltage in an ultra-small 1.0 x 1.0 mm package operating over a wide temperature range from -40 to +125 degrees C. The new temperature switch ICs have been optimized for use in smart phones, cellular phones, notebook PCs, tablet PCs, and other battery-operated portable device designs.

Temperature switch ICs are used to monitor temperature to keep devices functioning within a normal operating temperature range. The mobile/portable device market has been growing rapidly. The demand for additional functionality and higher processing speeds has increased heat generation. In addition to high density mounting and long battery life, these advanced devices require heat management to protect against malfunction.

The S-5844 series temperature switch IC detects the specified temperature and protects the device from heat generation by inverting its output when the temperature threshold is reached. The output voltage is restored when the temperature drops to the specified release temperature. This enables the device to avoid temperatures above its design limits, improving safety and efficiency while reducing total design cost.

The S-5844 series temperature switch IC operates at the low supply voltage of 1.65V with typical current consumption of 180nA extending battery life and device operating time.

The series utilizes a super-small HSNT-4(1010) package (1.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 mm), enabling high density mounting. The SNT-4A package (1.2 x 1.6 x 0.5 mm) is also available. With a wide temperature range of -40 degrees C to +125 degrees C, the S-5844 series allows for a wide range of applications.
