BURNABY, BC, May 28, 2019 /CNW/ - Best Buy Canada is proud to announce the 12 elementary schools, selected from more than 600 applicants, to receive a combined $100,000 in funding for tech-based curriculums through the Best Buy School Tech Grant program. Schools across the country will use these grants to give their students access to the latest in computer and digital technology to reduce the economic and digital divide and inspire them to achieve their highest potential as they move into high school and eventually on to post-secondary education.

"The goal for this program is to increase the exposure students have to technology so they can develop 21st-century skills," said Karen Arsenault, Best Buy Canada's Community Investment Manager. "The key to success for our recipients was the passion of the teachers and principals who outlined how additional technology would impact their students and provide unique experiences in the classroom."

The 12 schools receiving a Best Buy School Tech Grant are:

  • École Opasquia School – The Pas, MB
  • École Sans-Frontière – Québec, QC
  • Jersey Public School – Keswick, ON
  • Liverpool Street Elementary School – Fredericton, NB
  • Nakasuk School – Iqaluit, NU
  • New Hazelton Elementary School – New Hazelton, BC
  • Twelfth Avenue Elementary – Burnaby, BC

STEM Grants

General Tech Grants are designed to help improve or integrate technology in classrooms to advance student learning. This could include new technologies including libraries, special needs classrooms, literacy programs and more. STEM Tech Grants are for schools looking to enhance technology in programs pertaining to science, technology, engineering, and math, which includes robotics clubs, math programs, computer coding and digital media courses.

All twelve schools will receive their funding in the coming weeks and celebrations will happen at the School Tech Grant recipient schools with the support of local Best Buy teams.

Best Buy Canada focuses its community investment on supporting youth to connect with technology to inspire, motivate and empower their education. Through this mission, Best Buy has provided more than 210 Canadian schools with grants to purchase new technology, in addition to offering post-secondary scholarships and supporting youth with hands on tech learning opportunities.
