In a recent development, the Kremlin has stated that Russia and NATO are now in a state of “direct confrontation,” a declaration that comes as the U.S.-led alliance commemorates its 75th anniversary.

What Happened: The Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, made this remark on Thursday, reported Reuters. He pointed out that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and NATO’s continued expansion towards Russia’s borders have led to this situation.

President Vladimir Putin has consistently expressed his concern over NATO’s eastern expansion. The situation was exacerbated by Russia’s intervention in Ukraine two years ago, which was aimed at preventing NATO from encroaching further.

“In fact, relations have now slipped to the level of direct confrontation.”

NATO was “already involved in the conflict surrounding Ukraine (and) continues to move towards our borders and expand its military infrastructure towards our borders,” he said.

The West, however, maintains that NATO is a defensive alliance, and the countries that have joined it made a democratic choice after emerging from decades of Communist rule.

Putin has previously stated that a direct conflict between Russia and NATO would bring the planet to the brink of World War Three.

Why It Matters: This announcement comes in the wake of NATO’s proposal for a ‘Trump-Proof’ $107B Fund To Sustain Ukraine Military Support. The fund aims to secure long-term military support for Ukraine, safeguarding it from potential disruptions, such as those that might occur if former U.S. President Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Despite this, Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied plans to attack NATO countries. However, he has issued a stern warning about deploying F-16 fighters in Ukraine.
