Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized the recent Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp outage, attributing it to the platforms being “distracted selling their user’s data.”

What Happened: Musk, in a post on Thursday, pointed out the irony of the outage, saying, “Hard to keep the servers running when they’re so distracted selling their user’s data.”

This came after, on Wednesday, there was a brief outage affecting all Meta-owned platforms. During this time, numerous users encountered difficulties accessing these platforms, prompting them to voice their concerns on alternative social media channels.

Why It Matters: The technical issues mirrored a previous widespread outage about a month ago. Additionally, this week, users experienced difficulties on Instagram and its Threads microblogging service.

The recent outage comes amid allegations that Meta Platforms Inc. META is selling user data. This follows recent court filings, which allege that the company entered into a data-sharing agreement with Netflix that allowed the video streaming service access to users’ private messages.

Meta Platforms has refuted these allegations, calling them “shockingly untrue.” This is not the first time Meta Platforms has been under scrutiny for its use of customer data.

Earlier in March, Musk alleged that Meta Platforms “falsely” took credit for sales that originated from his social media platform, X, formerly Twitter.
