Apple's $1B Annual Investment Indicates Heavy Focus On Generative AI

In a bid to delve deeper into the realm of generative artificial intelligence (AI), tech titan Apple Inc. AAPL is reportedly planning to invest more than $1 billion annually. The company’s recent job listings suggest an increased focus on AI-driven features and products.

What Happened: As per a TechCrunch report on Sunday, Apple’s concentration on generative AI applications is becoming more prominent, following their release of an AI-based auto-correct feature for iOS 17 earlier this year.

Apple’s recent job postings indicate a clear movement towards AI, with roles such as a generative AI-based developer experience platform for the App Store and a “conversational AI platform” for the Retail department. Other listings within the AI/ML department and Siri Information Intelligence department highlight Apple’s commitment to developing fundamental AI models and integrating them directly into devices.

Notably, this is not Apple’s first foray into generative AI. However, the specificity of their current needs has increased substantially. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple intends to utilize large language models (LLMs) for features like sentence completion in Siri and the Messages app.

Apple’s primary competitors, including Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Alphabet, Inc. GOOGL GOOG, and Meta Platforms Inc. META, have already begun integrating AI-powered features across their product suites.

Why It Matters: Apple’s intensified focus on AI comes as the company has been playing catch-up in the AI sector. As noted in a previous Benzinga article, Apple was caught off guard by the sudden industry-wide interest in AI, and the company has been rushing to make up for what has been seen as a significant oversight.

The tech giant’s only major AI release until now was an improved auto-correct feature in iOS 17. However, with rivals like Microsoft and Google making substantial strides in AI, Apple’s recent AI push indicates a strategic shift to stay competitive in the marketplace.

Earlier this year, a warning from Needham & Company suggested that tech giants like Apple could be overshadowed by the rise of Generative AI, as new players leverage large language models (LLMs) to revolutionize industries.
