On Wednesday, Apple Inc. AAPL released the iOS 17.0.3 version, focused on addressing the overheating issue reported by several users of its latest smartphone lineup, the iPhone 15 series.
What Happened: Following user complaints about their iPhone 15 models running hotter than expected, Apple has launched iOS 17.0.3. The software update is aimed at resolving the overheating problem and comes with a changelog stating that it provides essential bug fixes and security updates.
“This update provides important bug fixes, security updates, and addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected.”
Previously, over the weekend, Apple confirmed reports that some iPhone 15 devices exhibited higher temperatures. The tech giant attributed this issue to a combination of factors, including improperly configured apps, bugs in the iOS operating system, and the initial setup period that involves additional processing and heat generation.
Cupertino also said that the overheating problem was unrelated to the design of the higher-end Pro models, which feature a titanium and aluminum frame and was also not associated with the new USB-C charging port introduced in the latest iPhone models.
One iPhone 15 user reported temperature going as high as 118ºF during regular use, a level of heat that could potentially cause first-degree burns.
At the time, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, said that compromises made in the device’s thermal system design to reduce the device’s weight, including a smaller heat dissipation area and using a titanium frame, could affect the temperature.
Why It’s Important: According to Apple’s official website, iPhones may feel warmer when restored from a backup, during wireless charging, while running graphics-intensive apps or games, or when streaming high-quality video.
However, the company assures users that iPhones are safe unless an explicit temperature warning is displayed.
“If your device doesn’t display a temperature warning, you can keep using your device.”
Meanwhile, on the same day, Apple’s rival, Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Google launched its latest smartphones, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, along with Pixel Watch 2.
The Google smartphones have a Tensor G3 chipset, several camera improvements, and a temperature sensor (in Pixel 8 Pro).
The search and advertising giant has outperformed Apple in some aspects.
The Pixel 8 Pro boasts the second brightest smartphone display globally, reaching an impressive 2,400 nits, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s screen peaks at 2,000 nits.
Additionally, Google has extended its software support for the Pixel 8 series to seven years, surpassing Apple’s traditional five-year support for iPhones.
