Apple Inc.'s AAPL iPhone 15 Pro is off to a bad start – from overheating to surprisingly bad throttling and scratches on the new titanium design; users have reported several issues within days of getting the phone.
What Happened: iPhone 15 Pro's top two highlights, the A17 Pro chipset and the new titanium design, could also be its two major points of concern for buyers.
Within days of getting the smartphone, iPhone 15 Pro users have reported endless issues with Apple's latest flagship.
Too Hot To Handle: One of the most widespread problems is overheating – the iPhone 15 Pro is reportedly getting too hot too fast. According to user reports, the iPhone 15 Pro is reaching temperatures of 118 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius).
This is as hot as a summer day in Texas. It can even cause first-degree burns, so using an iPhone 15 Pro could actually lead to a physical injury.
Best Game Console? A new video by a YouTuber has shown that the iPhone 15 Pro is bad at thermal throttling, too. The video shows a user playing a graphic-intensive game, Genshin Impact, lagging a bit too much for it to be playable.
The user is shown wearing gloves, suggesting the phone is too hot to handle otherwise. This could also explain the severe thermal throttling leading to extreme lags in gameplay.
Bad Titanium: Lastly, users have also been reporting a range of discoloration and scratch issues due to the titanium design.
The titanium design, which has helped Apple reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max by nearly 10% compared to their predecessors, is also not proving to be durable enough in comparison.
The first iPhone 15 Pro drop test showed that the titanium design with round edges is actually less durable than the iPhone 14 Pro’s stainless steel design, according to AppleTrack’s Sam Kohl.
Why It Matters: With Apple focusing on mobile gaming by relying on the far more powerful A17 Pro chipset, it is essential for the iPhone 15 Pro to manage heating properly.
Initial reviews from China also show a significant decline in power efficiency – there is a steep increase in the power consumption of the A17 Pro chipset, crossing the 10W mark. The A16 Bionic chipset’s power draw was 7W, according to benchmarks.
Apple has a tough task at hand – instead of just one issue, the company now has to tackle performance, durability, and design-related issues simultaneously.
