Does The iPhone 15 Pro Have A 'Discoloration' Issue? First Hands-On Photos Suggest It Is A Fingerprint Magnet

Apple Inc. AAPL spoke at length about the new titanium alloy design on the iPhone 15 Pro, but there could be a problem. Some people who got their hands on the iPhone 15 Pro suggest that this new titanium alloy design could be a fingerprint and grease magnet.

What Happened: Some Apple fans have spotted what could be a glaring design issue with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – the titanium alloy seems to be a huge fingerprint and grease magnet, so keeping it clean could prove to be a challenge.

Some fans are also suggesting that this could be a discoloration issue, which will be a bigger problem for Apple and iPhone 15 Pro buyers.

The titanium alloy design has been borrowed from the Apple Watch Ultra – although there have been phones like the Essential Phone, which used a similar design.

While launching the iPhone 15, Apple touted the high strength-to-weight ratio of titanium, which made it switch to this alloy, allowing it to reduce the overall weight of the iPhone 15 Pro over its predecessor.

Why It's Important: Apple's decision to go for ion plating, also known as physical vapor deposition (PVD), instead of anodizing could prove to be its Achilles' heel.

Using the PVD method has resulted in a fingerprint magnet design. It is also easily scratchable – a simple scratch can reveal the actual color of the titanium alloy so that discoloration could worsen significantly with usage.

Perhaps the $25 Apple polishing cloth could help with the fingerprints, though.
