Chris Christie Blames Trump's 'Swamp' For GOP Debate Jeers

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has pointed to vested interests in the political “swamp” created by ex-president Donald Trump as the source of the negative reactions he received at the GOP debate.

What Happened: Christie, who participated in the first GOP primary debate for the 2024 elections, informed Fox News on Thursday that the boos he encountered were from individuals who thrived in the divisive political climate established by Trump.

“And let's face it. Who was booing me in the crowd last night? Some of the folks who were doing the loudest booing are the people who are invested in the swamp that Donald Trump helped to create for them in Washington, D.C.," Christie said.

Christie, a staunch critic of Trump, had strongly condemned the former president during the debate, calling his conduct beneath the dignity of the presidency. This incited boos from the audience.

“Someone's got to stop normalizing this conduct, OK? … Now, whether or not — whether or not you believe that the criminal charges are right or wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of president of the United States," Christie said — the comment was met with boos, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Trump is anticipated to turn himself into Fulton County authorities following an indictment related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Why It Matters: The first 2024 Republican primary debate, which aired on Fox News, a unit of Fox Corporation FOXA, saw eight candidates vying for the GOP nomination.

The debate was held on the same day as an interview between Tucker Carlson and Trump, which was conducted at the former president’s New Jersey golf course and aired just five minutes before the GOP event.

The interview, along with Christie's vocal criticism of Trump during the debate, highlights the ongoing divisions within the GOP.
