Tesla Wins Trademark Battle In China, But It's Not Related To Electric Vehicles

The largest vehicle company in the world by market capitalization, Tesla Inc TSLA has made a splash worldwide, such as being one of the dominant players in the Chinese market.

The company recently won a trademark case in China, but it wasn’t related to its vehicles.

What Happened: Earlier this year, Tesla launched its novelty beer, which was made available for residents in several European countries.

While Tesla beer wasn’t official until 2023 and came after promises made by Musk in 2021, beer products named after Tesla have popped up in China since 2019.

According to a report from Teslarati, Tesla has successfully won a trademark lawsuit it filed against Chinese company Zhongyin Food Co.

Zhongyin Food has released several products related to “Tesla Beer” in the country and was found guilty of infringing on trademark rights owned by Tesla in the country.

Citing local news media IT House News, the food company made several alcoholic drinks named Tesla Soda and Tesla Beer dating back to 2019. A promotional picture of one of the products included the Tesla Model X, which may have misled consumers into thinking Tesla was behind the products.

The terms of the lawsuit will see Zhongyin pay Tesla a fine of around $690,000 and issue a public statement related to the case, along with discontinuing the production of the Tesla beer and soda-related products.

Why It’s Important: An electric vehicle company by day, Tesla has also expanded into merchandise and novelty offerings, with several related to alcohol.

In March, Tesla launched Tesla GigaBier in 330 ml bottles paying tribute to the highly anticipated Cybertruck electric pickup truck from the electric vehicle company.

“Tesla GigaBier is designed to emulate the form of Cybertruck while honoring the 500-year tradition of German Reinheitsgebot beermaking,” the Tesla website wrote. “Enjoy this limited-edition pilsner-style beer brewed in Berlin with our exclusive strain of Cyberhops and notes of citrus, bergamot and sweet fruit.”

GigaBier was only available for sale in European countries and came with a price of 89 euros for three bottles, which included the cost of shipping.

The launch followed a promise made as part of the building of the Tesla Giga Berlin gigafactory.

Tesla previously released Tesla Tequila for $250. The alcoholic beverage and bottle has become a collector’s item among Tesla fans and the empty bottles regularly pop up on eBay.
