Trump Says US Should 'Force' Peace In Russia-Ukraine War: 'This Is The Time To Do It'

On Thursday, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his views on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting that the U.S. should broker a peace settlement, Reuters reports.

What Happened: Trump, a longtime admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated that Putin has been “somewhat weakened” by an aborted mutiny and that now is the time for the U.S. to step in and negotiate a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine. Trump did not rule out that the Kyiv government might have to concede some territory to Russia to stop the war, which began with Russian forces invading Ukraine 16 months ago.

“I want people to stop dying over this ridiculous war,” Trump told Reuters.

“I think the biggest thing that the U.S. should be doing right now is making peace – getting Russia and Ukraine together and making peace. You can do it,” Trump said.

“This is the time to do it, to get the two parties together to force peace.”

Why It Matters: Trump’s comments come amidst a backdrop of his previous claims that he could have prevented the war in Ukraine. As reported by Benzinga, Trump has repeatedly stated that Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he were still in office. However, these claims have been met with skepticism, with critics pointing to Trump’s friendly relations with Putin during his presidency.
