Mike Burton, a 38-year-old rapper, has turned his passion into a profitable career, earning thousands of dollars a month by offering his rapping skills on the freelancer marketplace, Fiverr. Burton's journey from working at a call center to becoming a full-time rapper on Fiverr is an inspiring tale of perseverance and dedication

While working at the call center, he engaged a graphic designer, through the freelance marketplace Fiverr, for his solo rap projects and later stumbled upon individuals offering their rap skills on the platform, CNBC reported

In 2015, Burton decided to explore this avenue. By December 2016, when he lost his call center job, he had already amassed thousands of dollars from his endeavors on Fiverr.

Burton is now fully immersed in his career as a rapper on the Fiverr platform, dedicating himself to writing original verses for clients and earning an income of up to $9,000 a month. Here, he shares his career advice for graduates aspiring to find fulfilling work in their chosen passion.

Always Keep Learning

Burton adopted a self-taught approach, relying on YouTube tutorials to learn various aspects of music production. He would set personal challenges, such as composing a song daily, to enhance his skills and knowledge.

“Be voracious and read about what you’re doing and watching other people who have done it,” he said. “Stay a perpetual student of any craft you want to master so when the opportunity arises, you’ll be able to dive right in.”

Don't Give Up On Things You Love

Burton recommends people follow their passion and dream. “It might not be paying the bills right now, but the kinds of work people are hiring or looking for changes constantly, and there might be a future you’re not even aware of that opens a doorway into that dream,” he said.

“Anything where you just have so many questions, and you stay up late troubleshooting or reading about it, you just have an excitement just to know the ins and outs of it,” he added. “Don’t drop that.”

Connect With Others In The Industry

Burton recommends continually refining one's abilities and actively seeking out chances to use them. He also suggests that recent graduates should connect with individuals in their network who are involved in areas they're interested in to gain further insights.

“Whatever it is that you do, look at where it’s used and how it’s used,” Burton said.

“Keep your eyes peeled for opportunities you hadn’t considered as well by perusing freelance marketplaces like Fiverr, Upwork, or GigSalad or job board sites like Monster and Indeed,” he added.
