Canadian authorities have issued a travel advisory asking its citizens to “familiarize yourself on how to respond to an active shooter situation” when visiting the United States.

What Happened: Amid the rising number of cases of mass shootings over the country, Canada has asked travelers to remain vigilant and take security measures while visiting the U.S., explicitly highlighting the prevalent issue of gun violence in the country.

"The rate of firearm possession in the United States is high," the Government of Canada's travel information page notes.

"Incidents of mass shootings occur, resulting most often in casualties. Although tourists are rarely involved, there is a risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Why It Matters: Gun violence incidents have been on a rapid rise in the U.S. in recent years. Over 200 mass shootings were recorded in just the initial five months of 2023, per the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization monitoring patterns of gun violence.

Although the U.S. is generally considered safe for travel by many countries. However, the sporadic nature and frequency of mass shootings have sent shockwaves around the world.

The worst of the mass shootings, such as a recent one in a Dallas-area mall, which left nine people dead, including the gunman, have been making headlines worldwide, adding to the fear and validity of the advisory.

Meanwhile, Canada has also been grappling with its own challenges related to gun violence. While not as prevalent as in the U.S., instances of gun-related crimes and violence have been a looming concern for the officials.
