Nikki Haley Rejects Trump's Migrant Policy To Separate Children From Parents: 'Should Never Get To That Point'

GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley distanced herself from former President Donald Trump‘s controversial policy of separating migrant children from their parents.

What Happened: Haley, on Sunday, told “Face the Nation” that “It should never get to that point.” She was replying to a question asking if she would revive the Trump-era policy to deter illegal border crossings.

“No, we should not be separating families, but we shouldn’t be taking families that we don’t have any control over,” she said.

However, Trump’s former U.N. ambassador said the policy was implemented because the lawmakers have long been at a stalemate on immigration reform.

Haley said both Republicans and Democrats are responsible for the border crisis, adding that it was not handled properly and should have been addressed a long time ago.

According to her, the U.S. should halt immigrants until immigration reform is enacted. “I think we need to stop the bleeding of the border and completely do immigration reform before we can think of taking anybody else into this country.”

“We shouldn’t wait for another 9/11 to realize that Republicans and Democrats have to get in the room and figure out immigration reform and start working for the American people instead of the other way around."

Why It Matters: Thousands of migrants were trapped and waiting to cross the U.S. border as the Biden administration lifted Title 42 last week, which allowed border officials to quickly return asylum seekers over the border to prevent the spread of COVID-19. President Joe Biden has previously warned that the situation at the border would be “chaotic for a while.”

However, according to the government data obtained by CBS News, the number of people crossing the border illegally hasn’t gone up much.
