  • Jay Carney quit as Amazon.com Inc’s AMZN SVP of global affairs to fill the top policy position at Airbnb, Inc ABNB
  • Carney served as press secretary for former President Barack Obama from 2011 to 2014.
  • Carney will start at the vacation-rental company at the beginning of September.
  • Carney, 57, will fill the role previously held by Chris Lehane, who left earlier this year to join a crypto startup, Bloomberg reports.
  • In his seven years at Amazon, Carney built and ran the company’s global corporate affairs organization.
  • His previous experience in government and at one of the biggest technology companies, in addition to the two decades he spent as a journalist, gives Carney “a deep understanding of the needs of multiple stakeholders,” Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said.
  • Airbnb became a pandemic winner as employees exploited remote-work opportunities and sought out remote locations to live and work.
  • In 2019, Carney faced flak for criticizing the Trump administration while speaking at a public event and fat-shaming major league baseball umpires on his Twitter account.
  • The exit rendered Amazon vulnerable as it battled inflation and labor union challenges.
  • Earlier in June, Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO David H. Clark resigned after 23 years.
  • Price Action: AMZN shares traded lower by 2.40% at $121.63 on the last check Friday.
