How Companies Like Nordstrom, Goldman Sachs, Cisco Made Fortune's Best Places To Work List 20 Years Straight

Fortune Magazine has been releasing ‘100 Best Companies To Work For’ list for the past 20 years. In all that time, only 12 companies have made it every year: 

Cisco Systems, Inc. CSCO, Publix Super Markets Inc. PUSH, Whole Foods Market, Inc. WFM, Goldman Sachs Group Inc GSNordstrom, Inc. JWN, REI, Wegmans, TDIndustries, Marriott, SAS Institute, W.L. Gore & Associates and Four Seasons.

What makes these companies appear on the list year after year?

Goldman and REI offer fully paid sabbaticals; SAS, Marriott, Cisco, and Publix offer on-site childcare; six of the 12 give employees paid time off to volunteer. Eight of the 12 allow for job sharing, 11 offer compressed workweeks, and 10 provide college-tuition reimbursement,” Fortune said in its recent report.

Fortune noted that these companies extend many aspects of their generous treatment of employees to part-time workers, including paid time offs and health insurance.

For instance, Whole Foods workers can get company-sponsored health insurance with just 20 hours a week, versus the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandate of at least 30 hours a week. At Nordstrom, all part-time workers receive 19 paid days off. At Marriott, they get 18; at REI, 16.

Meanwhile, Fortune’s 2017 top 10 best companies to work for is as follows:

Fortune prepares its list of 100 Best Companies to Work For along with Great Place to Work, which conducts the most extensive employee survey in corporate America, along with feedback from more than 230,000 people.

In the survey, participants rate their workplace, including the quality of their leaders, support for their personal and professional lives, and their relationships with colleagues.

Survey results are compared with peer organizations of simlar size and complexity. In addition, Great Place to Work scores a Culture Audit management questionnaire from each company, which reports details such as compensation and benefits, hiring practices, recognition, training, and diversity programs.
