As President Donald Trump pledged 100% tariffs on foreign-made films, Alphabet Inc.‘s GOOGL GOOG Google has launched “100 Zeros,” a film and TV production initiative aimed at influencing Hollywood and reconnecting with younger audiences.
What Happened: The multiyear partnership with Range Media Partners seeks to fund and produce an array of scripted and unscripted content promoting Google products and positive tech culture, particularly to Gen Z viewers increasingly abandoning Google Search for platforms like TikTok, reported Business Insider.
“Through our continued partnership with Range, we aim to collaborate with the Hollywood creative community in a thoughtful and productive way,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.
Unlike YouTube Originals, 100 Zeros aims to sell projects to traditional studios and streamers like Netflix Inc. NFLX, which has seen its stock drop amid Trump’s tariff threats. The initiative’s early moves included backing Neon’s horror film “Cuckoo” starring “Euphoria” actress Hunter Schafer.
Why It Matters: Trump’s proposed tariffs could significantly disrupt Hollywood’s global production model, potentially impacting companies like Walt Disney Co. DIS and Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. WBD, which frequently film blockbusters overseas.
Peter Schiff warned that Netflix subscribers would ultimately bear tariff costs.
The initiative, led by Range’s Penny Lin with Google’s Jonathan Zepp as point person, represents a strategic move in an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape where consumer brands seek Hollywood partnerships to reach audiences resistant to traditional advertising.
Trump called foreign film production “a National Security threat” and “propaganda” while demanding “Movies Made In America Again!” as 2025 box office revenues show a 15.8% year-over-year increase.
