Gannett Wants Generative AI To Publish Content But With Human Touch: Report

Gannett Co Inc GCI reportedly plans to use generative AI to publish stories to boost efficiency and save money.

The publishing will still include humans in the process so that the technology can't be deployed without review, reported Reuters.

Renn Turiano, senior vice president and head of product, told Reuters, "Generative AI is a way to create efficiencies and eliminate some tedious tasks for journalists. The desire to go fast was a mistake for some other news services. We're not making that mistake."

As per the report, the company also plans to launch a live pilot program in Q4 at USA Today that uses AI to identify the key points of an article and create bulleted summaries.

GCI will have the journalists have the final say in the program and then include the technology in its publishing system.

Journalists are concerned about being replaced by an AI, but the report cited a company spokesperson who said that AI would not replace Journalists but would help them work efficiently.

Last month, GCI reported a Q1 FY23 sales decline of 10.6% Y/Y to $668.92 million, missing the consensus of $681.30 million and an adjusted EPS of $0.04, beating the consensus of $(0.06) loss.

Price Action: GCI Shares are trading lower by 1.79% at $1.9150 on the last check Friday.
