Google, Meta, Qualcomm: What's Brewing Behind Their Unseen Tech Coalition?

Zinger Key Points
  • Google, Meta, Qualcomm, and others create CODE to advocate for open digital platforms in the EU.
  • The Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems focuses on digital openness, responding to the EU's Digital Markets Act.

Alphabet Inc's GOOG GOOGL GoogleMeta Platforms Inc METAQualcomm Inc QCOM, and seven other technology companies have formed the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE) in response to new EU technology regulations

This alliance aims to foster open digital platforms and systems to stimulate European growth and innovation.

The coalition focuses on digital openness with academics, policymakers, and companies, particularly in implementing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and future EU regulatory frameworks, Reuters reports.

The DMA mandates that gatekeepers—large tech companies controlling platform access—must allow third-party inter-operation with their services.

Additionally, these gatekeepers must enable their business users to promote and finalize customer contracts independently of the gatekeeper's platform.

CODE's formation is a strategic move to shape digital ecosystem policies that promote openness and innovation while potentially influencing future legislation.

CODE's spokesperson, Lynx founder Stan Larroque, highlighted the coalition's discussions on what constitutes a beneficial digital ecosystem in Europe.

The association believes that openness is the key factor driving innovation and competitiveness.

CODE's membership includes diverse technology players: Chinese smart devices manufacturer Honor, Lenovo from China, French augmented reality start-up Lynx, U.S. telecom equipment maker Motorola, U.K.'s electronics maker Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera, and German messaging service provider Wire.

The coalition's objectives include promoting cross-industry collaboration, facilitating seamless connectivity, and advocating for interoperable systems to open digital ecosystems.
