China Cracks Down on Vulgar Content, Alibaba's Quark and NetEase's Livestream Platform Face Penalties

China's cyberspace regulator on Monday penalized Alibaba Group Holding Limited's BABA Quark platform 0.5 million yuan ($68,342.42) for hosting and promoting vulgar content.

The regulator also instructed NetEase, Inc's NTES livestream platform Netease CC to suspend the broadcast of some types of dance content for seven days due to vulgar content, Reuters reports.

Quark has reportedly banned relevant illegal content on the platform.

China had penalized Alibaba a record 18 billion yuan in 2021 for antitrust violations.

In July 2023, China ended its regulatory overhaul on fintech affiliate Ant Group by imposing a penalty of 7.12 billion yuan ($984 million).

Price Action: BABA shares traded higher by 0.40% at $83.15 on the last check Monday.
