Former President Donald Trump finds himself embroiled in yet another legal controversy related to allegations surrounding the unlawful retention and handling of sensitive government documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Here’s a breakdown of the ongoing case and the Thursday arraignment.

Main Players And The Charges: Walt Nauta, Trump's close associate, on Thursday entered a not guilty plea for the new charges brought forward by special counsel Jack Smith, according to CNN. Trump was not present at the hearing and entered his plea through his attorneys.

The arraignment for Carlos De Oliveira, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property manager and co-defendant in the case, was delayed due to his lack of legal representation in Florida. De Oliveira is now expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, August 15, the report said.

Both Nauta and De Oliveira face a gamut of charges including making false statements, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and corruptly altering and concealing documents.

The Alleged Conspiracy: During summer of 2022, under Trump’s directive Nauta moved boxes containing sensitive information, potentially to circumvent a grand jury subpoena, according to the indictment.

There is also an inquiry regarding an attempt to delete security footage at Mar-a-Lago. Both Nauta and De Oliveira allegedly inquired about the erasure of potentially incriminating evidence. Later, the FBI procured the surveillance footage, which showed the movement of the boxes in question.

De Oliveira is accused of providing false testimony regarding his knowledge and involvement in the movement of the boxes. The indictment counters his claims with evidence suggesting he actively helped move the boxes during Trump’s last days in office, CNN's report said.

Trump, already grappling with 37 counts related to mishandling sensitive documents, faces three new charges in the case, stemming from a recent investigation.

He now faces legal action for alleged efforts to remain in office post the 2020 election, and for purported financial misconduct leading up to the 2016 elections. A potential fourth indictment, tied to his endeavors to alter the 2020 election results, looms in Fulton County, Georgia.

The case against Trump, highlighting the mishandling of sensitive government data post his presidential tenure, is one of several launched by special counsel Smith.

As the allegations compound, Trump, in a characteristic manner, dismissed Smith’s investigation as a politically-motivated “witch hunt” and remains defiant, aiming for a 2024 presidential run.

A trial is set for May 2024.
