Former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have been the two leading vote-getters for many months in Republican polls, emerging as the top two GOP candidates for the 2024 election.
One recent poll showed a surge in support for a Republican candidate. But that candidate isn’t seeing the same numbers in a new state poll.
What Happened: The latest Morning Consult poll showed a rise in popularity for Vivek Ramaswamy with his support doubling from 3% to 6% in the span of several weeks.
A new poll asked which Republican candidate Republican voters and Independent voters would select if the 2024 election were held today. It didn’t generate the same result as the Morning Consult poll.
The poll was done for people registered to vote in the state of Texas with 78% of respondents saying they were Republicans and 22% labeling themselves Independents.
Here were the results:
Donald Trump: 51%
Ron DeSantis: 19%
Mike Pence: 5%
Nikki Haley: 4%
Chris Christie: 3%
Tim Scott: 3%
Will Hurd: 3%
Vivek Ramaswamy: 2%
Asa Hutchinson: 1%
Doug Burgam: 0%
Undecided: 10%
No other candidates were given as options in the poll.
Another poll of the same voters asked who they would select between Trump and DeSantis with no other candidates offered as options. The results were:
Donald Trump: 53%
Ron DeSantis: 32%
Undecided: 15%

Why It’s Important: While the poll only included the state of Texas, it represents one of the largest states by population and one that has voted Republican in presidential elections since 1980.
The results fall in line with the latest Morning Consult poll, which showed Trump at 57% and DeSantis at 19% and Mike Pence in third at 7%.
The big exception was Ramaswamy getting only 2% of support among Republican voters in Texas. In the latest Morning Consult poll Ramaswamy was ranked fourth at 6% behind Trump, DeSantis and Pence. No other candidate had more than 3%.
A new poll from Morning Consult next week could show if Ramaswamy is continuing to see increased support or if it was a one-off event.
In the latest 2024 presidential election betting odds, Ramaswamy is listed as an underdog at odds of +6600. Ramaswamy’s betting odds have improved in the months going from unranked in late 2022 to +10,000 to +8,000 to his current odds.
The other interesting point from the poll is the question of who voters would select between Trump and DeSantis in a head-to-head battle. Trump gained only 2% from the 51% he got among all voters. DeSantis jumps from 19% to 32% the majority of the support from voters who prefer other candidates.
The results show Trump could be dominating because of the crowded field. A pool of less Republican candidates could see a closer race and more competition for Trump.
