Elon Musk Reveals 'Blindsight' Will Be Next Neuralink Product: 'We Believe We Can Still Restore Vision'

Tesla Inc. CEO and Neuralink cofounder Elon Musk believes that one of the company’s upcoming products, "Blindsight," will be able to restore vision in people who were born blind.

What Happened: Musk revealed that "Blindsight" will be the next product from Neuralink after "Telepathy."

"Blindsight is the next @Neuralink product after Telepathy."

Neuralink, a neurotechnology startup cofounded by Musk and seven scientists, is currently working on a product called "Telepathy." This product allows patients – or users – to perform actions simply using their thoughts.

Musk’s post was a follow-up to the recent advancements in brain-computer interfacing.

"Even if someone has never had vision ever, like they were born blind, we believe we can still restore vision. Because the visual part of the cortex is still there. Even if they’ve never seen before, we’re confident that they could see."

Earlier, Neuralink’s first patient, Noland Arbaugh, demonstrated telepathy by controlling a computer and playing video games just by thinking.

Arbaugh, a complete quadriplegic, was able to achieve this feat during a live-streaming session.

In February, Musk revealed that Arbaugh, the first human recipient of a Neuralink brain chip, made a full recovery and could control a computer mouse using their thoughts, as confirmed by Musk during a Spaces event on his social media platform X.

Why It Matters: Musk has high hopes for Neuralink, with hopes that the company's chip implants can be useful in treating conditions like obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.

Ark Investment analyst Pierce Jamieson believes that Neuralink's N1 brain chip could fetch over $220 million in revenue in ALS patients by 2030.

That said, Neuralink has come under regulatory scrutiny over its safety protocols. Musk, though, thinks Neuralink technology will be crucial for humans to compete with AI.
