America Is The Greatest, Yet 14% Live In Poverty

Many people like to proclaim America is the most prosperous and greatest democracy ever produced. Yet, the Census Bureau reported today 14.3% of all citizens live in poverty. Poverty is defined as an annual income of $10,956 for an individual and $21,954 for a family of four. Call me crazy, but I find it nearly impossible for a family of four to live on $21,954 annually. So, the "real" povery rate is probably much higher. The poverty rate for children under the age of 18 now stands at 20.7%. This is disturbing because roughly one-fifth of the youth population will face limited career and educational opportunities due to poverty. Their ability to become productive members of society will be severely reduced.
