Twitter Inc TWTR has always had a lead over Facebook Inc FB when it came to real-time discussions around live events. However, if the coverage of Thursday's GOP debate is any sign, that seems to be changing.

SunTrust analyst Bob Peck was on CNBC Friday to discuss how Facebook is marching on to Twitter's territory and why Twitter needs a permanent CEO soon.

Facebook Is Where Twitter Should Be

"It was really amazing," Peck began. "Behind each candidate they had Facebook's logo. I mean at the corner of the screen they had Facebook the entire time and if you think about it, this is what Twitter should be with its Project Lightning, where they are supposed to aggregate content almost an instant channel that pop-up around live events."

"And it's a shame [since] Facebook is dominating right now, but it does give hope for where Twitter is going with its Project Lightning going forward."

Needs To Find A CEO Very Soon

On whether Twitter played an important role with a lot of discussions going on on its platform, Peck said, "Agree, we completely agree with that. We think it's also it's why its important for them to get to a CEO decision very soon. We hear there has been some bogging down as far as making decisions by middle management."

He continued, "You have also had a brain drain continuing with Trevor O'Brien [...] and Todd and product people leaving. So we would like to see the CEO get settled and then be able to get these other decisions made and make progress on all these new products and initiatives."

Peck explained why Twitter is taking so much time in finding a new CEO by saying that it needs a "Unicorn CEO" (a term borrowed from Re/Code's Kara Swisher). "There's a lot of things you want: intimate knowledge, product knowledge and business knowledge.
