Google announced Tuesday that it will offer United States military service personnel free calling from anywhere in the world through Gmail.
We understand that it's not always easy or affordable for our troops serving overseas to call friends and family at home, so starting today we're making it completely free for all uniformed military personnel with valid United States Military (.mil) email addresses to call the United States, right from Gmail.
The new offering requires military members to have a valid U.S. Military email address ending in .mil. Qualified users can easily add their military email address to their existing Google account. As always, calling from Gmail requires the Google voice and video Gmail plugin.
Google says that the service will remain free "for at least the rest of 2011."
