Ramsey didn't think the math added up. The potential net income wasn't worth the investment, especially considering the risk that Phillip might lose clients due to the transition. Phillip also commented that many clients are loyal to the current owner and any price increases could further drive them away.
Ken Coleman echoed Ramsey's concerns and encouraged Phillip to focus on his growing side hustle instead. Coleman highlighted Phillip's progress so far, noting how impressive it was that he had built up a business while maintaining a full-time job. With a strong salary and a growing side hustle, Coleman suggested Phillip take the more cautious route and avoid taking on debt to buy the larger business.

"I don't see a huge windfall to take on this financing," Coleman said. "I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s enough of a benefit to take on the debt. It doesn't make sense to me."
Both Ramsey and Coleman explored other options that Phillip could consider. Ramsey floated the idea of structuring a deal with the current business owner where Phillip wouldn't purchase the practice outright but would instead share revenue for a set period.&nbsp;

Another suggested option was a "finder's fee" arrangement, where Phillip could take over the clients and pay the original owner a referral commission. This would allow him to grow his client base without taking on a large debt upfront.
In the end, Ramsey and Coleman's advice was clear: buying the $225,000 business didn't make financial sense. Instead, Phillip should continue to build his side hustle organically, avoiding <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/09/40838359/dave-ramsey-says-youre-wasting-5-000-a-year-if-you-spend-13-70-a-day-on-things-you-dont-need">unnecessary debt</a> and growing his business at his own pace.

Sometimes, even the most boring stocks hold big potential. Look at plant-based <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-staples/food/">food stocks</a>, for example.&nbsp;



While these may not be the most exciting stocks, statistics point to strong future growth. Younger generations, including Generation Z, just saw a five percentage-point increase in their adoption of plant-based food since 2021. All of which presents &ldquo;a significant opportunity for sustainable food brands,&rdquo; <a href="https://trellis.net/article/study-younger-generations-drive-consumption-plant-based-food-while-baby-boomers-lag-behind/">as noted by Trellis.net</a>.



In addition, according to <a href="https://blog.brightfieldgroup.com/gen-z-shifts-away-from-meat-and-dairy">analysts at the Brightfield Group</a>, &ldquo;Gen Z is opting for plant-based dairy alternatives such as oat milk, plant-based ice cream, pea milk and soy milk. They do not appear to be adopting plant-based meat replacements with the same enthusiasm.&rdquo;



With stats pointing to further growth, <a href="https://www.sphericalinsights.com/press-release/vegan-food-market">analysts at Spherical Insights</a> say the global plant-based market could be worth about $55.84 billion by 2033 from $23.73 billion today.



That being said, investors may want to keep an eye on plant-based food stocks, such as:



<h2>Oatly (OTLY)</h2>

For one, earnings are improving. Its <a href="https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2024/07/24/oatly-group-ab-otly-q2-2024-earnings-call-transcri/">earnings per share loss of five cents</a>, for example, beat estimates by two cents. Revenue of $202.2 million, up 3.2% year-over-year, beat by $910,000. It also raised its full-year outlook for revenue growth to a new range of 6% to 10% from 5% to 10%. It also expects to post an EBITDA loss of $35 million to $50 million, which is slightly better than its prior calls for a loss of $35 million to $60 million.



Two, the plant-based drink is popular. In fact, over the last year, U.S. retail sales jumped to $695 million (28% growth), <a href="https://ambrook.com/research/supply-chain/oat-shortage-milk-demands">according to Ambrook.com</a>. Demand for oat milk is also up in grocery stores, where it held a 24% share of the retail plant-based milk market in 2023.&nbsp;



That being said, OTLY could push higher over the long haul.



<h2>Ingredion (INGR)</h2>

And it carries a healthy dividend of 2.43% and just recently paid out a quarterly dividend of 78 cents.



Earnings have also been okay. Its EPS of $2.87 beat by 38 cents. Revenue of $1.88 billion did miss by $100 million, though. INGR also raised its full-year EPS guidance to a new range of $10.20 to $10.70, and also raised its adjusted EPS range to $9.70 to $10.20.



Plus, <a href="https://ir.ingredionincorporated.com/news-releases/news-release-details/ingredion-completes-reorganization-reports-first-quarter">as noted in a recent press release</a>, the company expects to deploy cash towards organic investments, dividends and share buybacks. 



However, despite recent positives, I&rsquo;d wait for the stock to cool off a bit. At the moment, it&rsquo;s technically stretched at $128.19. It&rsquo;s also overbought on RSI, MACD and Williams&rsquo; %R. So, I&rsquo;d wait for it to pullback a bit before taking a long position.



<h2>Bunge (BG)</h2>

Thanks to a massive pullback in the broader market, BG slipped from about $115 to a recent low of $96. Here, it&rsquo;s also wildly oversold on RSI, MACD and Williams&rsquo; %R. From here, I&rsquo;d like to see it refill its bearish gap at around $115 near term.



It&rsquo;s also not a plant-based pure play, but it does offer the ingredients used in meat and dairy alternatives. Plus, it carries a healthy dividend yield of 2.84%, which we can collect while waiting for the eventual recovery in the Bunge stock.



We also have to consider that BG has priced in a good deal of weakness, including the overall market decline, the <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4132416-bunge-downgraded-at-citi-on-biofuels-weakness-viterra-doubts">Citi analyst downgrade on biofuels weakness</a> and the delay of its $8.2 billion acquisition of Viterra.&nbsp;



That being said, take advantage of BG weakness and collect its yield while you wait.

Since I&rsquo;m severely lactose, I eat many plant-based foods and drink many plant-based beverages. The data suggests that many other Americans, whether because of lactose intolerance or for other reasons, eat plant-based foods and drink plant-based beverages. Indeed, &ldquo;The (United States) plant-based food <a href="https://gfi.org/marketresearch/">market surged from</a> $3.9 billion in 2017 to $8.1 billion in 2023,&rdquo; according to Good Food Institute. With so many interested customers, plant-based <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-staples/food/">food stocks</a> are a solid buy. 



The institute pointed out that the growth was spurred &ldquo;by products that appeal to mainstream consumers by mimicking the taste, texture, and functionality of conventional animal products.&rdquo; Meanwhile, according to Statista, worldwide sales of <a href="https://www.statista.com/forecasts/877369/global-meat-substitutes-market-value">plant-based meat alone</a> are expected to surge from $10.15 billion in 2023 to $16.78 billion in 2028. For investors who want to profit from the latter trend, here are three growing plant-based <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-staples/food/">food stocks</a> to buy now.



<h2>Oatly (OTLY)</h2>

Last quarter, in a very encouraging development, the company <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4127401-oatly-rallies-after-posting-its-first-positive-adjusted-ebitda-quarter-for-north-america">reported its first-ever</a> positive EBITDA, excluding certain items, in North America. Moreover, its overall revenue climbed 3.9%, excluding currency changes, versus the same period a year earlier. The latter increase was driven partly by a year-over-year surge of 9.6% in sales volumes, as measured in total liters. Furthermore, the firm expects its revenue growth to come in at 5% to 10% for the full year. Finally, Oatly&rsquo;s gross margin jumped to 29% last quarter from 19.2% in Q2 of 2023.



Also positively, Oatly gave a major update on its Q2 earnings<a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4706305-oatly-group-ab-otly-q2-2024-earnings-call-transcript"> call last month</a>. The company had received &ldquo;positive test results with China&rsquo;s largest coffee chain.&rdquo; The statement, which likely refers to Luckin Coffee (OTC:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/lkncy-stock-quote/">LKNCY</a>), suggests that Oatly may benefit over the longer term from being utilized by many of Luckin&rsquo;s customers.



Since Luckin <a href="https://www.worldcoffeeportal.com/Latest/News/2024/May/Luckin-Coffee-surpasses-18,500-stores-in-China-but">had 18,500 stores</a>, such a development could very well be needle movers for Oatly and OTLY stock.



All of this positive news makes Oatly one of the best plant-based food stocks to buy now.



<h2>Ingredion (INGR)</h2>

The company&rsquo;s Ultra Performance line contains<a href="https://www.ingredion.com/na/en-us/news-events/news/ingredion-wins-2022-world-plant-based-award.html"> up to 60% plant protein.</a> It also improves the taste and texture of many foods, including plant-based food and beverages, the company reported in 2022. It accomplishes the latter goal by &ldquo;using pea protein without the raw plant flavor,&rdquo; Ingredion explained.



Ingredion&rsquo;s earnings per share, excluding certain items, <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4134628-ingredion-non-gaap-eps-of-2_87-beats-0_38-revenue-of-1_88b-misses-100m">surged 24% </a>last quarter versus the same period a year earlier. Also positively, its sales volumes increased 5% year-over-year, <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4711008-ingredion-incorporated-ingr-q2-2024-earnings-call-transcript">excluding the impact of</a> the divestment of its South Korean business. The firm raised its 2024 adjusted EPS guidance to $9.70- $10.20 from $9.20-$9.85 previously. The Texture and Healthful Solutions Unit <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4711008-ingredion-incorporated-ingr-q2-2024-earnings-call-transcript">includes dairy alternatives </a>and products used to improve the texture of meat alternatives. Their volumes climbed an impressive 8% YOY.



The company has launched two plant-based products this year which I believe have a great deal of potential. First, its Clean Taste Solubility Solution is over <a href="https://www.ingredion.com/na/en-us/news-events/news/breakthrough-ingredion-stevia-solution-unmatched-in-consumer-testing.html">100 times more </a>soluble than standard stevia. It also tastes better than &ldquo;artificial sweeteners and other stevia ingredients&rdquo; in consumer testing, according to the firm. The product also &rdquo;&nbsp;enables 100% sugar reduction, and is ideal for use in beverages, fruit preps, syrups, liquid concentrates, bars and sauces,&rdquo; Ingredion stated.



Secondly, the firm unveiled <a href="https://www.ingredion.com/na/en-us/news-events/news/new-pea-protein-launched-to-maintain-softness-throughout-shelf-l.html">a pea protein product</a> that it says will better preserve protein bars than the plant proteins that are commonly used to preserve them.



<h2>Sweetgreen (SG)</h2>

Unsurprisingly, it does enable vegans and vegetarians to order a wide array of completely plant-based dishes such as Shroomami. 



Other offerings from the company include Guacamole Greens (without chicken) and Curry Cauliflower (without chicken). Given the huge number of vegetables and completely plant-based sauces and dressings that the firm offers, I think chances are high that many U.S. vegans and vegetarians eat there frequently.



In Q2, the company&rsquo;s revenue<a href="https://seekingalpha.com/pr/19813402-sweetgreen-inc-announces-second-quarter-2024-financial-results?source=section%253Amain_content%257Cbutton%253Abody_link%257Cfirst_level_url%253Anews#hasComeFromMpArticle=false"> jumped 21% versus the same</a> period a year earlier to $184.6 million, while its same-store sales surged 9% year-over-year. Moreover, its EBITDA, excluding certain items, came in at $12.4 million, up from $3.3 in million in Q2 of 2023.



In light of Sweetgreen&rsquo;s rapid growth and its high appeal to vegans and vegetarians, I view it as one of the best plant-based food stocks to buy now.

3 Plant-Based Food Stocks with Potential for Market Expansion

A few years ago, venture capital poured a lot of money into the plant-based foods market. 



At the time, the possibilities seemed bright. Particularly with younger more health-conscious consumers, it seemed like &ldquo;better for you&rdquo; foods could take major market share.



However, fast-forward to 2024, and adoption has been much slower than anticipated. Major fast-food chains have started to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-26/mcdonald-s-says-plant-based-test-in-two-key-us-cities-failed">give up on vegan burgers</a> after unsuccessful product tests, and sales momentum has slowed at grocery stores as well.



Be it the high cost of plant-based foods in these inflationary times, perceived inferior taste and texture, or simply consumer indifference, plant-based foods have failed to revolutionize the packaged foods industry so far. These three plant-based <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-staples/food/">food stocks</a> to sell are in particular trouble.



<h2>Beyond Meat (BYND)</h2>

Last week, shares popped from around $5.25 to more than $6/share following the company&rsquo;s <a href="https://investorplace.com/earning-results/2024/08/bynd-stock-earnings-beyond-meat-for-q2-of-2024/">earnings report</a>. That&rsquo;s not too unusual.



What happened next, however, was bizarre. On Friday, shares with no reported news skyrocketed from $6 to $9 within an hour. Almost as soon as it happened, it was over. BYND stock crashed back to $6.39 by the end of the day and closed the session in the red despite the earlier 40% rally.



Beyond Meat&rsquo;s earnings weren&rsquo;t awful &mdash; the company shrunk its operating loss, and results were roughly in line with expectations. However, the business continues to shrink. Revenues of $93.2 million fell sharply year-over-year from 2023&rsquo;s $102.2 million over the same period.



Even in a time of elevated inflation, Beyond Meat seems unable to increase product pricing without losing customer interest. This speaks to a weak brand struggling to hold shelf space in a crowded protein marketplace.



BYND stock has been volatile recently. However, the business&rsquo; trajectory continues to be steadily downward and traders should get off this ride while they can.



<h2>Oatly (OTLY)</h2>

In recent years, we&rsquo;ve seen strong marketing drives behind almond, soy, rice, coconut, hemp and pea milks.



And that&rsquo;s even before getting to Oatly (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/otly-stock-quote/">OTLY</a>) and its oat-based alternative. The company was founded in the 1990s and markets itself as the original oat drink superior to animal-based milks. However, its nutritional data shows that Oatly contains much more sugar than protein, leading some nutritionists to question how much healthier oat drinks are versus cow milk.



In any case, Oatly has struggled to find a consistent market. In 2021, the company announced big partnerships, such as bringing Oatly to Starbucks (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/sbux-stock-quote/">SBUX</a>) stores nationwide.



However, the firm&rsquo;s revenue growth dramatically tailed off in 2022. Meanwhile, it continues to run massive operating losses. Oat milk has to compete with all the other plant-based milk within the oat space versus cheaper store-branded alternatives. All this makes Oatly&rsquo;s future incredibly challenging.



<h2>Calavo Growers (CVGW)</h2>

The company wasn&rsquo;t created to displace an existing animal food commodity.



That said, Calavo&rsquo;s core market, avocados, has emerged as a leading health food item&mdash;particularly for younger consumers. It&rsquo;s no coincidence that avocado toast became the touchstone item for what millennial eaters were spending their incomes on.



In any case, Calavo&rsquo;s avocados and other fresh fruits and vegetables are a nice alternative for folks looking to reduce or entirely stop their consumption of animal foods.



Unfortunately, a good nutritious trend isn&rsquo;t necessarily a good investment. CVGW stock has slumped in recent years amid disruptions in a key avocado-growing region of Mexico. These issues appear to be <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/02/us-news/mexican-cartel-violence-could-drive-up-prices-of-avocados-in-the-us/">getting worse</a>, not better, which could further hamper Calavo&rsquo;s profit margins.



Calavo&rsquo;s revenues slumped from $1.19 billion in 2022 to an estimated $644 million this year, a massive decline. Thus, CVGW stock looks like a value trap, given the uncertainty in its business model and issues in the avocado supply chain.
