The risk with lump-sum investing is that if the market drops right after you invest, your portfolio could take a hit. However, if the market trends upward, you benefit from having all your money working for you from the start.

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/11/41867042/the-worst-idea-ive-ever-heard-in-my-life-suze-orman-responds-to-listener-about-selling-everything-within-ira-and-reinvesting">Dollar-cost averaging</a> involves investing a fixed amount at regular intervals—say, $1,000 per month over 12 months. This approach reduces the risk of investing everything at a market peak. When prices are low, you buy more shares; when prices are high, you buy fewer.
Using the same $12,000 example, Orman illustrated how this method can result in owning more shares by the end of the year. In the first month, that $1,000 would get 8.33 shares of that stock or ETF at $120 a share. If the stock goes down to $90 a share the second month, you're still investing $1,000, but you would pick up 11.1 shares.&nbsp;
Orman continues the example with fluctuating stock prices between $90 and $120 each month. In her example, $1,000 per month could result in 107.74 shares instead of 100. At the end of the year, with the ETF at $120 per share, the investment is worth $12,928—higher than the lump-sum approach.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Value-Cost Averaging: Adjusting Contributions for Growth</h2>
Value-cost averaging is a more dynamic strategy that adjusts monthly investments to maintain a target portfolio value. Instead of investing a fixed amount each month, an investor contributes just enough to reach an increasing target value (e.g., $1,000 in month one, $2,000 in month two, and so on).
This method requires more calculations, but Orman highlighted its potential benefits. In her example, value-cost averaging resulted in owning 108.31 shares—slightly more than dollar-cost averaging. At the end of the year, the same example portfolio would be worth $12,997, surpassing both lump-sum investing and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/08/40430034/you-look-at-what-you-had-not-what-you-have-and-other-investor-mistakes-that-suze-orman-says-you-">dollar-cost averaging</a>.

Marvin Washington knows pain.
Not the kind that comes and goes. The kind that lingers. The kind that burrows deep into your body and settles in for the long haul. The kind that every former NFL player knows far too well.
For 11 seasons, Washington lined up against the best—a relentless defensive end for the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. A force on the field, smashing through offensive lines, chasing down quarterbacks, absorbing hit after hit after hit. And he played through it all.
Because that's what you do in the NFL.
You get hurt. You take something for the pain. You get back out there.
And for decades, that "something" was opioids.
It was pills in the trainer's room, pills in your locker, pills before practice, before games, before bed. It was normal. Until it wasn't. Until guys started needing them just to function. Until guys started losing everything to addiction. Until some of them didn't make it out at all.
Washington saw it happening in real-time. And he knew there had to be a better way.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The NFL's Unspoken Epidemic</h3>
"The short answer is yes," Washington says when asked if sports are finally shifting away from opioids. "Between all of the expos, conventions and panels that are happening, former athletes, mostly led by cannabis athletes, have brought this issue to the mainstream. It's been covered by mainstream media publications, and it has made all leagues at all levels aware of the opioid issue with athletes and society in general."
But awareness doesn't always mean action.
Even today, painkillers remain the default prescription for pro athletes, even as the consequences become impossible to ignore. The body count is real. So is the devastation.

Washington has spent years pushing for a different path. And in his mind, cannabis is part of the answer. Not just because it works, but because it doesn't destroy lives in the process.
"We're seeing firsthand the evolution of cannabis," he says. "Leafwell is fulfilling the vision that so many sports cannabis pioneers, such as Ricky Williams, Kyle Turley Riley Cote, etc., have been fighting for over a decade. It's no longer when and if, but when—and that's now."

Guys are already using it—for pain, for recovery, for mental health, for CTE, for sleep. They just can't talk about it freely. They still risk judgment, stigma and roadblocks when it comes to access.
Washington wants to change that.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Business Of Change</h3>
Of course, sports leagues don't move fast—unless there's money involved.
"The biggest roadblock is the prohibition at the federal level," Washington says. "However, leagues have been starting to see, just like with the other ‘vice' industries—such as alcohol and gambling—the benefits of partnerships with the cannabis industry are the financial benefits. MLB allows cannabis advertising, and USC (University of Southern California) partnered with the cannabis company Cookies on a sponsorship deal with their athletic department. The economic impact is powerful, and the Trojan horse—the medicinal benefits—are in the belly that will be let out to show them that cannabis is medicine."
Translation? Money talks.
Once the financial upside becomes too big to ignore, leagues will follow. But Washington isn't waiting around for them to figure it out.

"Like any other business, you must educate yourself, know your target market, surround yourself with good, sound business people and have solid business principles."
It's not just about building a business. It's about changing an industry. And that takes time, strategy and persistence.
Because even with legalization expanding, social equity is still an uphill battle.
"The thing that is making progress is the legalization of cannabis in the Atlantic states," Washington explains. "Very respectful of the early legal states west of the Mississippi, but the population centers are on the Eastern seaboard, with the people who need social equity. It's moving—maybe not as fast as some would like, but it's moving."
Slowly. But it's moving.

If he could sit across from Roger Goodell or any other league commissioner, Washington knows exactly what he'd say.
"Cannabis is medicine and a viable, safe alternative to opioids."
It's not just an opinion. It's science. It's real. It's the truth.
And Washington isn't just talking about it. He's making sure it happens.
Because for too long, cannabis in sports has been about punishment.
Now, he's making sure the next phase is about healing.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/02/10/nec-director-kevin-hassett-on-new-metal-tariffs-trumps-reciprocal-tariff-plan-and-tax-priorities.html">told CNBC</a> on Monday that Trump's comments weren't about payments to holders of US debt but possible improper payments to contractors and for grants.

To help crack down on eliminating waste and identify fraudulent spending in the federal government, Trump has enlisted billionaire <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/25/01/42802794/there-wont-be-money-for-social-security-elon-musk-tells-joe-rogan-about-looming-bankruptcy-and-1-1-trillion-interest">Elon Musk</a> to lead an overhaul of federal government operations. Musk's newly established Department of Government Efficiency has reportedly been reviewing payroll and spending records, raising privacy and security concerns.
A federal judge recently blocked Musk&#8217;s team from accessing and storing data from certain government financial systems, citing the risk of improper disclosure of sensitive information. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Musk's team had only &#8220;read-only&#8221; access and could not make changes to the system.

Ramsey didn't immediately dismiss the idea but instead posed some key considerations before making such a big purchase.

In this case, the Lamborghini exceeds that threshold, though Ramsey noted it's not a strict rule. Instead, he introduced what he calls the &#8220;burn the money&#8221; test.

Ramsey explained to the caller what he and his wife Sharon do in case something &#8220;feels kind of like a weird large purchase.&#8221; They ask themselves, &#8220;If I took this much money and set fire to it, does my life change?&#8221;
If the answer is yes, then it's too expensive. Given the caller's net worth, Ramsey acknowledged that losing $250,000 wouldn't be catastrophic. However, he pointed out that luxury cars depreciate quickly.
&#8220;The 250 is going to be worth 150 in 20 minutes. You know that, right? The perfect storm of Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) is only growing stronger. According to a <a href="https://clearingcustody.fidelity.com/app/literature/report/9887538/fidelity-wealth-management-ma-transaction.html">new study</a> by Fidelity Investments, 2015 saw 89 RIA M&amp;A deals, while last year saw a whopping 233.
Over the same decade, the value of acquired assets grew from $130 billion to almost $670 billion. This growth happened despite the spike in interest rates over that time.
The reasons are clear: advisory owners are growing older and looking for an exit strategy that lets them cash out and retire.
What is changing, according to Fidelity, is how buyers are acting, and who they&#8217;re buying. Acquirers are becoming much more active in setting up a growth path for the RIAs they buy and merge. RIAs with more than $1 billion in client assets are beginning to get bought up too and lots of new buyers are making moves recently.
But it&#8217;s the serial acquirers that continue to lead the pack. Focus Financial, for example, closed 21 RIA M&amp;A deals last year across its affiliates, while Wealth Enhancement Group bought 12 and Waverly advisors 10.
Clearly, there&#8217;s a lot of appetite out there for buying and consolidating the RIA space.
Appetite is so high, in fact, that last October was the strongest ever month for RIA M&amp;A, Fidelity reports. This is down to deals taking about seven to nine months to close. So targets that get identified at the beginning of a year will end up acquired toward the end of that year.
Second, the presidential campaign included ideas about changing the tax treatment of unrealized capital gains, which may have pushed companies to close their deals before the New Year.
With that now looking less likely and interest rates down, it seems this RIA M&amp;A wave isn&#8217;t going away anytime soon. Small and large RIAs should take note, decide if they want to join in, and if so, work to increase transparency, reduce revenue risks and develop clear plans for how to support and grow revenue streams, including through reaching new, younger clients.

Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>)&nbsp; is weighing a shift toward more plastic bottles in the U.S. as new aluminum <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/25/02/43572782/gm-ceo-on-trumps-trade-threats-we-can-adjust-to-anything-automaker-braces-for-25-tariffs-on-popular-cars-made-in-mexico-and-canada">tariffs</a> threaten to drive up production costs.&nbsp;
The 25% tariff, announced by President Donald Trump, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/12b16867-4e0e-4534-8a00-922665e680aa">takes effect on March 12</a> and applies to foreign steel and aluminum. Since Coca-Cola imports aluminum for its cans from Canada, the company is looking at ways to keep prices stable.
"If aluminum cans become more expensive, we can put more emphasis on PET bottles," Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey told investors in an <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4757080-the-coca-cola-company-ko-q4-2024-earnings-call-transcript">earnings call</a> this week. He acknowledged that packaging costs are just one part of the company's overall expenses but said rising aluminum prices still matter.&nbsp;

"I think we're in danger of exaggerating the impact of the 25% increase in the aluminum price relative to the total system," Quincey said. "It's not insignificant, but it's not going to radically change a multibillion-dollar U.S. business."
Coca-Cola has been selling more drinks in aluminum cans in recent years as part of its sustainability efforts. Still, in 2023, nearly half (47.7%) of its beverages were packaged in plastic, while aluminum and steel cans made up just 26%, according to the company's most recent <a href="https://www.coca-colacompany.com/content/dam/company/us/en/reports/2023-environmental-update/2023-environmental-update.pdf#page=9">environmental report</a>.&nbsp;
The company had set a goal to make all of its packaging recyclable this year and to use at least 50% recycled content by 2030. But as of last year, only 17% of its PET plastic contained recycled material.

The tariffs aren't just a concern for beverage companies. Automakers like Ford (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) also rely heavily on aluminum, and CEO Jim Farley warned the new policy could create "blow a hole," in the US auto industry, according to media reports. The tariffs come as part of Trump's broader trade strategy, which this time he says will be enforced "without exceptions or exemptions."
If Coca-Cola does increase its use of plastic, it's likely to draw criticism. The company has repeatedly been named the <a href="https://www.breakfreefromplastic.org/2024/02/07/bffp-movement-unveils-2023-global-brand-audit-results/">world's top plastic polluter</a>. According to Break Free From Plastic's 2023 audit, Coca-Cola produces more than 3 million tons of plastic packaging each year.&nbsp;

Environmental advocates argue that shifting away from aluminum—despite its higher costs—could make it harder to meet global recycling goals, particularly in areas with limited waste management infrastructure.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/25/02/43463099/donald-trumps-25-tariff-plan-only-tough-measures-will-level-the-playing-field-kevin-oleary-explains-the-strategy">Trump</a> has also moved to bring back plastic drinking straws, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/02/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-ends-the-procurement-and-forced-use-of-paper-straws/">rolling back federal rules</a> that encouraged paper alternatives. The decision follows complaints from businesses about the cost and durability of paper straws, which many consumers say don't hold up as well as plastic.
Coca-Cola says it remains committed to sustainability despite the challenges. "We aim to collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one sold by 2030," the company said in its sustainability update. In 2023, it reported that 62% of its packaging was collected for recycling or refilled, and 90% was technically recyclable.
