Hung Lung Properties primarily operates in Mainland China and Hong Kong where it develops and invests in a portfolio of commercial properties for rental income, as well as develop residential properties for sale. Most of its revenue is generated in China where it focuses on retail malls in Tier 1 and 2 cities such as Shanghai, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Kunming, Jinan, Dalian, Shenyang, and Tianjin. Chinese stock markets resumed their sell-off, falling sharply on Tuesday despite recent efforts by the government to slow <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">the pace of the decline</a>.
Hong Kong&#8216;s Hang Seng index fell 2.3% while the Shanghai Composite shed 1.8%. Property stocks were among the biggest fallers.
Hang Lung Properties (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HLPPY#OTC">HLPPY</a>) was the worst-performing stock, down 8.4%, while Longfor Properties (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LGFRY#OTC">LGFRY</a>) shed 6.3%.
Shares in what was once China&#8217;s leading property developer China Evergrande remained suspended from trading at HK$0.16 after falling around 21% on Monday following a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/01/36824858/evergrande-liquidations-snowball-effect-whats-next-for-chinas-troubled-real-estate-">court liquidation order</a>.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Short Selling Ban</h2>
Promises of government support helped lift the markets a little last week, and the Hang Seng made a notable 4.2% recovery. 
On Monday, the news of Evergrande&#8217;s eventual demise — having been a zombie stock for several years — may have already been priced into the markets, as the response from investors was muted.
Some believed that a ban on short selling announced on the weekend, may have slowed the selling on Monday, but it resumed with gusto on Tuesday.
The short-selling ban was instigated by the China Securities Regulatory Commission, halting the lending of shares to traders who take bearish positions on stocks whose prices lose value.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Investors Flee</h2>
However, analysts believe the bulk of the selling isn&#8217;t coming from hedge funds and other alternative investment firms that are most likely to use shorting strategies. Much of the sell-off is plainly down to investors who believe that now is the time to exit and put their investments elsewhere.
Indeed, one area of the Chinese market which has flourished in recent days is exchange-traded funds tracking foreign markets, according to <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/chinas-cratering-markets-drive-mainstay-retail-investors-away/ar-BB1hoxzd">data</a> from Reuters, with prices on some funds rising 30%-40% above asset values.
Certainly, for U.S.-listed ETFs tracking Chinese markets, the traffic is all one-way, with fund flow data on the iShares MSCI China ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCHI#NYSE">MCHI</a>) showing net outflows of $473.3 million in the past month. Hardly surprising for a fund that&#8217;s lost a third of its value in the past year.

The main problem isn&#8217;t the economy. Growth, while not in the double digits of the country&#8217;s &#8220;economic tiger&#8221; years, remains reasonably robust. 
Most market analysts put the problems down to politics and China&#8217;s trade skirmishes with the U.S. and other western countries, and its ever-deepening internal struggle to sustain the relationship between the Communist Party and the capitalist economy.
Tim Seymour, founder and CIO at&nbsp;Seymour Asset Management, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/12/36369921/exclusive-find-value-in-large-multinationals-and-catch-the-dividend-yield-says-tim-seymour">told Benzinga</a> last month that he&#8217;d become more cautious on China and that &#8220;sentiment is as low as I&#8217;ve ever seen it.&#8221;
He looked at growing state control through so-called &#8220;golden share&#8221; acquisitions of companies such as Tencent (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TECHY#NYSE">TECHY</a>) and Alibaba (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>).
"Think about Tencent and Alibaba — the pressure is coming from within and not with U.S. investors, and this is part of the problem," he said.

Hong Kong stocks ended a quiet week in the green as speculators bet that government easing measures in China would come into place to stimulate the local economy. The Hang Seng Index finished the day&rsquo;s trading 1.6% higher at 17,485.98.
China&rsquo;s stock markets and banks were closed this week for the annual National Golden Week Holiday, which investors hope also provided a boost to consumer spending.
About HK$60 billion&nbsp;($7.7 billion) of shares were traded per day in Hong Kong this week, about half the weekly 12-month average volume.
A Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gs#NYSE">GS</a>) report stipulating that the economic slowdown in China is coming to an end followed a similar report by Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/c#NYSE">C</a>) Thursday which stated that the bottom is in for a slump in exports and weak consumer confidence on the mainland.
&ldquo;We expect growth and inflation to bottom out in the near term on stabilising exports, less drag from inventory destocking and increased policy offset,&rdquo; Goldman&rsquo;s economists wrote in the report.
Property stocks and exporters got most of the action as investors bet that a turning point for China&rsquo;s economy had been reached. Hang Lung Properties Limited (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hlppy#OTC">HLPPY</a>) jumped 2.3%, Sino Land Company Limited (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/snlay#OTC">SNLAY</a>) rose 1% and Country Garden Holdings Company Limited (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ctryy#OTC">CTRYY</a>) leaped 3.5% on the day. Sunac China Holdings Limited (OTC: SNCNF) surged 10.5% after it successfully convinced a Hong Kong court Thursday to vote in favour of its $10.2 billion offshore debt restricting proposals, approved by 98% of its creditors in a fortnight-ago vote.
Consumer names Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/baba#NYSE">BABA</a>) and JD.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jd#NASDAQ">JD</a>) were both higher by 1.5%. Tencent Holdings Limited (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcehy#OTC">TCEHY</a>) and insurer AIA Group Ltd. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/aaigf#OTC">AAIGF</a>) were both around 2% stronger on the day as both companies continued their aggressive multi-month stock repurchasing programs on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
CNOOC fell a bit after Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-06/china-oil-giant-cnooc-to-repay-dollar-bond-week-after-due-date?srnd=premium-asia" style="color:#0563c1">reported</a> today that it told investors there would be a delay of seven days in an offshore bond repayment to account for the Chinese national holiday. The $1.3 billion investment grade 10-year bonds issued in 2013 were trading at 99.99 cents on the dollar, indicating that investors were unconcerned about any credit risk from the issuer, but the incident sparked discussions about what constituted a debt default in light of recent property share credit defaults. In the bonds&rsquo; terms of repayment, it stipulates they will be repaid within two working days of the maturity date of the notes according to a New York and Australian working week.
Caixin, China&rsquo;s largest business daily <a href="https://www.caixinglobal.com/2023-10-06/in-depth-nio-looks-to-ride-uptick-in-ev-sales-out-of-slump-in-crowded-market-102114221.html" style="color:#0563c1">reported</a> that automaker NIO Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nio#NYSE">NIO</a>) is starting to put pressure on rival EV makers Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/li#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xpev#NASDAQ">XPEV</a>) and BYD Company Limited (OTC: BYDYY) in China after raising sales commissions for its agents.
Minimum sales commissions paid to NIO sales reps have been more than doubled recently, Caixin said, from 800 RMB ($110) to 2,000 RMB per car sold and by over fourfold from 800 RMB to 4,000 RMB per car for inventory stock and showroom display vehicles. The big increase in sales commissions was what helped the company achieve over 6 billion RMB in sales and raise sales over the 20,000-mark in July this year.

Stocks That Hit 52-Week Highs On Tuesday

Bank of America Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bac#NYSE">BAC</a>) swung to a fourth-quarter profit on Thursday. Bank of America posted its quarterly net income of $1.58 billion, or $0.15 per share, versus a year-ago net loss of $1.57 billion, or $0.16 per share. Its total revenue surged to $24.89 billion from $22.4 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.15 per share on revenue of $24.08 billion. 

Morgan Stanley (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ms#NYSE">MS</a>) swung to a loss in the fourth quarter. Morgan Stanley posted a quarterly loss of $227 million, or $0.15 per share, versus a year-ago profit of $600 million, or $0.42 per share. Its consolidated net revenue dropped to $5.71 billion, from $7.74 billion, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.57 per share on revenue of $5.99 billion.

Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/luv#NYSE">LUV</a>) reported a 16% rise in its fourth-quarter net income. Southwest Airlines' quarterly earnings rose to $152 million, or $0.20 per share, from $131 million, or $0.18 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Its shares outstanding surged 4.4% to 783 million. Southwest Airlines' adjusted earnings came in at $0.09 per share. Its revenue surged to $4.11 billion from $3.11 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.08 per share on revenue of $4.12 billion.

Johnson Controls Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jci#NYSE">JCI</a>) reported a rise in its first-quarter profit. Johnson Controls' quarterly profit surged to $410 million, or $0.60 per share, from $375 million, or $0.55 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its sales rose to $10.42 billion from $9.54 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.62 per share on revenue of $10.53 billion. 

BB&amp;T Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bbt#NYSE">BBT</a>) reported an 88% jump in its fourth-quarter earnings. BB&amp;T's quarterly net income surged to $391 million, or $0.55 per share, from $208 million, or $0.30 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Its revenue gained 3.4% to $2.4 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.53 per share on revenue of $2.18 billion. 

Huntington Bancshares Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hban#NASDAQ">HBAN</a>) reported a 3.2% rise in its fourth-quarter earnings. Huntington's loan-loss provisions dropped to $45.3 million, versus $87 million, in the year-ago period. Huntington's quarterly profit rose to $126.9 million, from $122.9 million. Its per-share earnings gained to $0.14 from $0.05. Huntington's revenue fell 5.2% to $644.4 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.14 per share on revenue of $653 million.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/unh#NYSE">UNH</a>) reported a 21% rise in its fourth-quarter profit. UnitedHealth's quarterly profit surged to $1.26 billion, or $1.17 per share, from $1.04 billion, or $0.94 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue rose 7.9% to $25.92 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.04 per share on revenue of $25.69 billion. 

Knight Capital Group Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/kcg#NYSE">KCG</a>) reported a rise in its fourth-quarter earnings. Knight Capital's quarterly earnings surged to $40.2 million, or $0.43 per share, from $9.2 million, or $0.10 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed 32% to $341.3 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.25 per share on revenue of $313 million. 

Rockwell Collins (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/col#NYSE">COL</a>) reported a decline in its first-quarter net income. Rockwell Collins' quarterly net income dropped to $130 million, or $0.86 per share, from $151 million, or $0.96 per share, in the year-earlier period. Its sales fell 1% to $1.09 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.84 per share on revenue of $1.09 billion. 

PPG Industries Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ppg#NYSE">PPG</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $ 1.39 on revenue of $3.50 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.28 per share on revenue of $3.50 billion.

Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fcs#NYSE">FCS</a>) reported a drop in its fourth-quarter profit. Fairchild Semiconductor's quarterly profit declined to $21.3 million, or $0.17 per share, from $51 million, or $0.28 per share, in the year-earlier period. The company's adjusted net income came in at $0.15 per share. Its revenue dropped 15% to $339.4 million, versus $397.7 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.17 per share on revenue of $358.8 million. 

Blackrock Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/blk#NYSE">BLK</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $3.06 on revenue of $2.23 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $3.04 per share on revenue of $2.25 billion. 

Netscout Systems Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ntct#NASDAQ">NTCT</a>) reported its Q3 EPS at $0.35 on revenue of $83.30 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.33 per share on revenue of $81.99 million.

Novozymes A/S (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/nvzmy#OTC">NVZMY</a>) reported a 3% rise in its fourth-quarter net profit. Novozymes projects 2012 net profit to rise between 5% and 8% It expects earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to rise by 9% to 12% versus 2011. Novozymes' quarterly net profit climbed to DKK362 million, versus DKK350 million. Its sales gained 8% to DKK2.59 billion, from DKK2.40 billion. However, analysts were expecting net profit of DKK374.1 million on sales of DKK2.61 billion. 

Webster Financial Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wbs#NYSE">WBS</a>) reported its Q4 EPS at $0.43, versus analysts' estimates of $0.42.

Hang Lung Properties Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hlppy#OTC">HLPPY</a>) reported a 26% drop in its net profit for the July-December period. Hang Lung Properties' net profit for the period ended December 31 declined to HK$2.52 billion, versus HK$3.42 billion, in the year-ago period. Hang Lung's underlying profit surged 29% y/y to HK$1.65 billion, from HK$1.28 billion. Its revenue gained 22% to HK$3.07 billion versus HK$2.52 billion.

India's HDFC Bank (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hdb#NYSE">HDB</a>) reported a 31.2% surge in its fiscal third-quarter net profit. HDFC Bank's net profit climbed to 14.3 billion rupees ($283.8 million), from 10.9 billion rupees, in the year-ago period. Its non-interest revenue gained about 26%. Net interest income from its core banking operations climbed nearly 12% to 31.2 billion rupees. Analysts were expecting a net profit of 13.49 billion rupees.

Sony Ericsson swung to a loss in the fourth quarter of 2011. Sony Ericsson posted a quarterly pretax loss of 247 million euros ($316.57 million), versus a profit of 31 million euros in the previous three-month period. Analysts were expecting a profit of 41.7 million.
