Home oxygen measurement solution for sleep and ventilation launched at ERS 2011

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (PRWEB UK) 28 September 2011

Royal Philips Electronics PHGPHI today launched the new Oximetry Module, a home oxygen measurement device designed to monitor people diagnosed with respiratory disorders such as sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to record their blood oxygen level by means of a single finger probe.

The Oximetry Module, which was launched during the 2011 Congress of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) in Amsterdam, is designed to help physicians to better determine whether complex respiratory events are present during a person's period of sleep at home.

“Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) (or home ventilation) has been demonstrated to be effective treatment in some forms of respiratory failure. When starting NIV, it seems desirable to verify whether this particular form of treatment is effective and has no untoward effects. Greater insight, provided by simple cost effective monitoring tools like oximetry and other signals obtained from non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) devices; help identify issues early in the patient's therapy. This subsequently improves their long term outcomes and quality of life,” says Dr. Claudio Rabec, clinical expert in pulmonary diseases at the University Hospital of Dijon, France.

Respiratory conditions such as sleep apnea and COPD, impact millions of people across Europe. Currently, over 100 million people worldwide are suspected to have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and the World Health Organization estimates 64 million people worldwide have COPD, a leading cause of death worldwide and currently the fourth biggest killer in the EU.

With this latest launch, Philips is building on more than 25 years of experience in bringing home monitoring products to market and reinforcing its commitment to delivering solutions that support improved treatment and healing away from the hospital, in the comfort of peoples' own homes.

Philips showcases expertise and innovation in monitoring solutions:
Also being showcased during the ERS are a number of new and existing products designed to help improve the management and treatment of chronic disease, and lower hospital readmission rates, with the potential to reduce costs and increase efficiencies.

Amongst the technologies being showcased is Encore AnywhereTM, a web-based patient management system which, following its success in the USA, is now being introduced into Europe, initially through a pilot scheme in The Netherlands. It enables homecare providers and physicians to remotely optimize a patient's sleep and home ventilation therapy, improving results and increasing compliance.

Philips is also presenting the I-neb, a novel drug delivery inhalation device currently benefiting patients across Europe. The device is designed to deliver a precise, reproducible dose of drug that simultaeneously enables patients to train themselves - through audible and tactile feedback - in the optimal breathing technique, thereby supporting adherence.

“At ERS 2011 we're showcasing the latest developments that will help make the transition from care, treatment and healing in the hospital to the home, a reality,” commented Mats Dahlquist, General Manager of Home Healthcare Solutions in Europe. “And at a time when health budgets across Europe are being cut, the potential for monitoring solutions that deliver health care not only more efficiently, but also more cost-effectively, is both an exciting prospect and clear priority, and one that Philips is proud to be involved in making a reality.”

During the ERS, Philips is also launching the BiPAP A30 at the ERS, a non-invasive ventilator that combines ease-of-use with new technology that adapts to the patient's needs to deliver personalized and optimized long term therapy; as well as the OptiChamber Diamond, a valved holding chamber for use with inhaled respiratory drugs.

These products exemplify Philips' commitment to providing innovative monitoring solutions for patients at home, and add to Philips' existing portfolio that includes Motiva, a TV-based telemedicine platform designed to help people manage long-term conditions such as COPD and heart failure, which works by engaging with the user through personalized daily interactions and the delivery of educational content through their home TV.
