BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Continuous Computing®, the global provider of integrated platform solutions that address the mobile broadband capacity challenge, today announced that its flagship FlexTCA™ wireless and packet processing platform has been upgraded to support the new 40G AdvancedTCA (ATCA) standards. Targeting Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) applications, the company’s new FlexTCA 40G offering constitutes the industry’s most advanced integration of switching and multi-core processing capabilities in the ATCA form factor.

Featuring highly-optimized backplane performance and a new generation of backward-compatible, best-in-class blades that minimize networking cost per bit, Continuous Computing’s FlexTCA 40G platforms are suitable for deploying core and edge elements in 3G wireless, Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+), WiMAX and LTE networks. These platforms also support numerous DPI-centric applications, including security, lawful intercept, video content delivery and traffic shaping applications.

Driven by mass market adoption of smart phone and mobile computing devices, the explosive growth in wireless traffic requires significantly higher performance in mobile telecom infrastructure. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index, a typical smart phone user consumes 30 times as much data as a traditional wireless phone user. Data consumption increases exponentially to 450X for those with a connected notebook or netbook computer. Keeping pace with such massive demand requires new technologies that can dramatically improve performance and scalability.

Globally, Tier 1, 2 and 3 network equipment providers want standards-based alternatives to the expensive, proprietary solutions which currently inhabit carrier and data center networks. Widespread deployment of ATCA platforms such as FlexTCA 40G makes sense, especially for WiMAX and LTE carrier rollouts. By leveraging innovative new technologies such as NetLogic Microsystems’ (formerly RMI) best-in-class XLP™ multi-core, multi-threaded processor family which can push performance per ATCA slot from 10Gbps to 40Gbps, today’s state-of-the-art networking solutions need more scalable and robust platform capabilities than the existing infrastructure can support.

Building on the success of earlier generations of its integrated telecom platform, software and services portfolio, Continuous Computing’s FlexTCA 40G provides not only the highest input/output (I/O) density and packet processing power of any ATCA solution available, but also establishes a new floor for customers’ cost per bit. Indeed, by delivering sophisticated load balancing, traffic manipulation and distribution capabilities, FlexTCA 40G cuts network equipment providers’ development time, cost and risk for deploying next generation applications, including internet offload, traffic shaping, policy enforcement, network security, video and content delivery, and more.

“Mobile broadband traffic growth continues to outpace the industry’s ability to keep up, which is why FlexTCA’s leap to 40G is so relevant and timely,” said Mike Coward, CTO and co-founder of Continuous Computing. “With FlexTCA 40G, Continuous Computing has raised the bar for delivering integrated wireless and DPI platforms which incorporate the latest technologies with innovative architectures, wringing the most performance out of every cycle and every system.”

Key features of FlexTCA 40G include:

  • Industry’s highest ATCA I/O density and support of the latest 10GbE, 40GbE and 100GbE interfaces
  • Optimized backplane performance delivering 40G connectivity between all switch and payload blades
  • New FlexCore™ ATCA-FM80 40G switch with up to 4X improvement in backplane switching capacity plus session-based load balancing, greatly improving DPI system capabilities when compared to Link Aggregation Group (LAG) methods for distributing traffic across a platform
  • New FlexPacket™ ATCA-PP80 deep packet inspection blade with NetLogic Microsystems’ XLP832 processors, each delivering up to 3X performance improvement over current generations
  • FlexCompute™ ATCA-XE60 compute blade with dual Intel® Xeon® 5500 series processors supporting the option of either Intel Xeon L5518 or higher power Intel Xeon E5540 processors
  • Optimized Layers 2-7 knowledge-based processing (KBP) header/payload lookup acceleration for maximum platform throughput
  • FlexChassis™ 2-slot, 6-slot and 14-slot options with enhanced cooling capacity for max-performing blades; choices offer native AC & DC power entry, extending network applications suitable for ATCA while simplifying and lowering inventory management costs
  • Optional Professional Services and turnkey integration packages tailored to specific customer performance, testing, certification and deployment requirements

“FlexTCA 40G raises the bar for AdvancedTCA platform capabilities to effectively address next-generation LTE mobile packet core requirements,” said Behrooz Abdi, Executive Vice President and General Manager of NetLogic Microsystems. “By capitalizing on the advanced capabilities of our XLP processor coupled with our L2-4 KBPs and NETL7™ KBPs in the PP80 packet processing blade, Continuous Computing has once again demonstrated its market-leading ability to give network equipment providers the huge boosts in performance, flexibility and scalability needed to differentiate and succeed while also protecting customers’ existing software investments.”

FlexTCA 40G platforms are available now. Strong deployment candidates include network elements such as Serving / Gateway GPRS Support Node (SGSN / GGSN) and Access Service Network (ASN) Gateway in 3G wireless networks; and Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), Serving Gateway (SGW) and Mobility Management Entity (MME) in the LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC).
