Washington Gas to Move Headquarters to The Wharf in DC

WGL WGL, the parent company of Washington Gas Light Company, has announced that Washington Gas will relocate its corporate headquarters to 1000 Maine Avenue SW, Washington, D.C. in 2018. The selected site is part of The Wharf, a $2 billion, mixed-use neighborhood being built by PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette on D.C.'s Southwest waterfront, spanning a mile along the Potomac River.

WGL chose The Wharf because of its commitment to revitalize the District, create a new vibrant business culture, and implement diverse and sustainable energy practices.

"WGL is proud to join in one of the largest redevelopment opportunities in our nation's capital and reaffirm our long-standing commitment to a community we have proudly served and lived in for nearly 170 years. Our new home will improve the work environment for employees, accommodate future growth and be part of an exciting neighborhood," said Terry McCallister, Chairman and CEO of WGL Holdings, Inc and Washington Gas. "By supporting the common goal of maintaining healthy waterways and improving the surrounding environment, we're contributing to the city's clean energy renaissance."

Washington Gas will occupy at least two floors of 1000 Maine, the 11-story, 250,000 square foot trophy office building that is currently under construction. The facility will be home to nearly 200 Washington Gas employees, including its executive officers as well as its financial, legal and corporate work. The company signed a lease for a 16-year term and expects to move in around summer 2018.

Washington Gas' new corporate headquarters will provide a state of the art workplace for employees, offering cutting edge technology, close proximity to public transportation and has been designed to meet LEED Gold Core and Shell green building standards. With access to more than three million square feet filled with offices, residential property, restaurants, hotels, retail shops, cultural arts center and a marina, The Wharf also features multiple forms of on-site sustainable energy production and conservation, such as a natural gas combined heat and power (CHP) plant, energy-efficient lighting and solar panels.

In addition, WGL, through its subsidiary WGL Energy Systems, Inc., plans to own, operate and maintain a 39.3 kW solar system that will generate 49,243 kWh of power per year in the common areas of the apartment building adjacent to the company's headquarters at The Wharf.

"We applaud Washington Gas for keeping its corporate headquarters in the District of Columbia and continuing to drive economic development in the nation's capital," said Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner. "The Wharf is a transformative project for our city, creating a new waterfront neighborhood that is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We are excited that one of Washington's oldest and most recognized organizations will become part of this new community."

"We are thrilled that WGL—a diverse energy company so well established in the District—is making The Wharf its new home," said Monty Hoffman, Founder and CEO of PN Hoffman. "WGL is a terrific anchor for The Wharf because we align on multiple levels, including commitment to sustainability, great respect for the environment, and a community-oriented approach to business."

"The Wharf is attracting an innovative, top-tier class of industry leaders, and we are becoming the destination for attracting and retaining top talent," said Amer Hammour, Chairman of Madison Marquette. "Washington Gas is bringing their headquarters to 1000 Maine because of this trophy building's central waterfront location, superior amenities, access to great restaurants and venues, and beautiful environment."

Washington Gas' agreement includes a wide range of branding, greening and energy efficiency initiatives serving The Wharf as well as opportunities for community involvement.

The new location is approximately two miles from Washington Gas' current headquarters at 101 Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington DC, which it has leased since 2003.

With approximately 1,500 employees in the region, WGL and its entities continue to extend its presence in DC, Maryland and Virginia service territories. Last year, WGL Energy began operations from a new headquarters building in the Tysons area of Northern Virginia. A Washington Gas workforce training facility is in the design stage for expansion in Chillum, Maryland. WGL is the 5th largest Fortune ranked company based in DC.1
