An issue with Zoom Video Communications Inc ZM occurred Thursday afternoon, causing the service to go down, affecting some of the many businesses and customers who have relied on it for meetings since since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

What Happened: There were over 16,000 user reports of issues with Zoom starting a just after 2:17 p.m. EDT, according to data from outage-tracking site Down Detector.

Zoom, which experienced a brief outage in September, said in a 2:33 p.m. update on its website: "We have resolved issue that was causing a subset of users to be unable to reach zoom.us. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as we have them."

Users took to Twitter to share in their frustrations.

“Zoom is down, the entire planet not being able to host meetings except Microsoft employees that are the only ones using Teams,” one user wrote.

“Very unprofessional from @Zoom not to address the issue of it being down for over an hour!” Another user tweeted.

Why It Matters: Zoom emerged as the world’s most-used web conferencing platform shortly after the pandemic started, with 300 million daily meeting participants by April 2020.

“Annual minutes” represents the total cumulative runtime of every Zoom call over the course of a year. According to the Zoom Analyst Day presentation, it logs over 3.3 trillion annual minutes.

According to G2, a peer-to-peer review site, Zoom ranks as the best video conferencing software, with Microsoft Teams and Skype taking the second and third place, respectively.
