GoPro Inc.
GPRO
ticked up about 1.5 percent Wednesday, a day after is prime supplier Ambarella Inc.
AMBA
beat quarterly earnings estimates. Ambarella gets roughly a third of its revenue from supplying video chips to GoPro, along with other customers including smartphone and action camera maker Xiomi Inc. GoPro has gained about 75 percent in the year since its initial public offering, while Ambarella is up about 132 percent in the same period. GoPro traded recently at $59.33, up $0.93 cents; Ambarella was up nearly 4 percent at $95.87. The outperformance of Ambarella versus GoPro "might signal that investors are more comfortable betting on the overall trend of personal video, rather than GoPro's particular strategy," asset manager Barry Randall said in a Bloomberg opinion essay Wednesday. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/bringing-gopros-future-into-focus-2015-06-03 Randall also noted Ambarella's much wider cash flow margins relative to GoPro. During the past month, Ambarella shares are up roughly 25 percent, versus about 19 percent for GoPro. Ambarella clearly got a pop from its quarterly report as investors increasingly anticipated a beat as the posting date approached. But GoPro has been busy lately with its own market news unveiling a new, touchscreen camera model last week, along with a couple of virtual reality cameras it expects to launch, one in a partnership with Google Inc.
GOOGL
. GoPro acquired virtual reality technology company Kolor in April for an undisclosed price. Also recently, GoPro Chief Executive Nicholas Woodman confirmed plans to offer a drone product aimed at consumers. Ambarella on Tueday posted first-quarter revenue growth of about 74 percent. Chief Executive Fermi Wang attributed the increase to camera demand from GoPro's wearable category as well as from security and automotive segments. Wang also cited increasing business spurred by "quadcopters or flying cameras."
