Tesla Inc‘s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Cybertruck Lead Engineer confirmed on Thursday that the recent video posted by the company of its stainless steel electric truck off-roading is not AI-generated.
What Happened: “You can see it has mirrors and no door handles as proof it’s not AI-generated,” Wes Morrill said on X about the recent Cybertruck off-roading video released by the company. Morrill’s comments came in response to an X user’s comment who called it “sci-fi.”
The video shows a team at Tesla testing the Cybertruck’s off-roading capabilities in Moab, Utah, and driving it through dirt trails, climbing rocks, and wading through water.
“After how difficult it was to walk up and scout, was definitely nervous driving up to the start of the Escalator and staring up at the wall in front of me… But with a good spotter, Cybertruck made it so easy!,” Morrill said about his experience driving up the obstacle nicknamed Escalator on Hell’s revenge trail in Moab. The nickname is owing to the steep incline of the rock.
“If you get a chance to see some of these obstacles in person it gives a real appreciation for how capable the truck is,” Morrill said.
Through the video, the team used different tires and different pressures as ideal for the different surfaces. “The stock Goodyear all-terrain tires were the best tire we tried on Moab slick rock,” the engineer said.
The company subsequently started rolling the updates out in late April.
Tesla emphasizes the Cybertruck's suitability for any terrain through its website descriptions. Features like electronically adaptive air suspension and a ground clearance of up to 16 inches contribute to its off-road capability. Additionally, the stainless steel exterior enhances dent and damage resistance, while the armored glass is designed to withstand the impact of Class 4 hail.
