Can Google Save Us From Awkward Typos? This Upcoming Feature Hints So

Google GOOGL is reportedly developing a much-anticipated message editing feature for its messaging platform.

What Happened: Google is addressing user requests by working on a message editing feature, as revealed by The Spandroid on Monday. After progressively enhancing its messaging platform with new features, flags linked to this feature reportedly surfaced in the Google Messages beta version in late November. These flags are associated with enabling the editing interface, accessing the edit history of messages, and handling both outgoing and incoming edited messages.

A new database table called ‘message_edits’ has also been detected in the code. It is speculated that this table will store information about edited messages and process them for both the sender and recipient. The message editing feature is currently under development and is not yet operational, even after enabling the associated flags.

Why It Matters: Google’s decision to introduce a message editing feature, which is not a standard part of the RCS, showcases its determination to enhance user experience, a commitment it previously demonstrated by implementing end-to-end encryption. In December 2023, Google’s Rich Communication Services or RCS in Messages announced that it had reached the milestone of one billion monthly active users. The release of new features, including Photomoji and custom chat colors, accompanied this.

In August 2023, Google also began working on adding an emergency SOS feature in Messages, a life-saving addition currently available only on iPhones, to Android 14. The emergency SOS feature is expected to expand rapidly to other countries and users.
